1984 Chieftain 22 gas mileage?

I am new to this. My 1984 Chieftain 22ft gets 5.5 miles to the gallon. Is this correct? If I de-smog will it get better? Any other suggestions? Replace carb with bolt on fuel injection? Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan, That sounds really low MPG to me!!! I can't offer any real advice as we have a 27ft 6.2l Diesel and that gets 15MPG

But I would definitely get another opinion on it. I am surprised no one from the USA has not replied to you yet. I am sure someone will soon.

(We are in the UK)

What engine do you have? the Chevy 454?
I had one of those and I could get 6.5 - 7mpg, but I have found that the speed is a big factor. Keep it under 60 and it will get a little better.

Is anyone out there? 454 gas engine, runs well now but 5.5 mpg on 87 octane is what I get.

It sounds like an internally-melted catalytic converter to me.

I get 10 to 11 miles to the gallon on my 1984 Winnebago 22. chieftain. I only run 57 up to 60 MPH. It is your catalytic converter.
