As every connection diagram and video shows, it must be connected directly to EVERY chassis load ground and
directly to the Battery's main negative terminal.
ALL negative loads - solar controller, inverter and of course chassis they ALL must go on the load side of the shunt. AND you need to connect the battery side to the battery with wiring of equal gauge. So, if your positive and negative battery cables are say, 2 GA then the cable from the battery side of the shunt must be AT LEAST as thick a gauge.
The shunt is made to handle 500 amps and everything goes through it. So very big cables are needed.
If you run
any incidental negative load directly to the battery and not through the shunt then your state of charge will not be accurate.
