where to stay

Might want to check out harvesthosts.com. They show some places along your route. Tends to be dry camping with some electrical. Typically a small parking lot. You'll be the only RV on the lot or one of a few. Has worked out well for us in the past.

I-5 South of Redding is a very nice Indian Casino campground at Corning CA. It claims to be the 1/2 way point between Seattle and L.A. We've stopped there several times - nice campground and the food in the casino is pretty good.

Further down I-5 is Santa Nella. Stop for split-pea soup at Andersons. There is a reasonable overnight RV park on the other side of the highway.

Further south I try not to stop - unless you want to do things like Hearst Castle - which means you get way off the freeway. That is mostly farm and cattle country.

You probably want to time your passage through the Grapevine to correspond to non-commute hours in the LA Basin. Traffic there can be impressive. It's starts to pickup at Santa Clarita and goes forever. If necessary I would hang out in the rest area on the Grapevine.

Good luck. I hope the $5.00/gallon gasoline doesn't cause a heart attack.

I will just give an extra vote on using 101 for any north south trip as long as you have the time to do it. Traveling anywhere right now with out reservations can be pretty dicey. I’m now in the San Diego area and everything is pretty booked up. Made my reservations 6 months ago.

Agree but UT 12 is one of the most beautiful drives you will find anywhere, and HIGHLY recommend Escalante Cabins and RV park in Escalante, UT

I haven't seen anyone mention the Morro Bay area, is it crowded there? In the past we have never found it crowded, but those were in our car-hotel travel days.

Traveling Oregon Hwy 97 - Interesting spots on the Washington Side (HWY 14) Maryhill Museum has world class artist paintings. Nearby is a concrete clone of Stonehenge in England. If you don't mind boondocking, there is a large flat gravel parking lot in Biggs Jnct, OR right on the Columbia River, next to the intersection of HWY97 and Hwy84. Beautiful view, might be windy and hwy noisy.

Hwy97 from Biggs to Madras isn't terribly interesting.

Madras south volcanic area has a lot to see and do with many rest stops. There are several wild fires currently burning in this stretch, the air quality is terrible.

The Bend/Redmond OR area of HWY97 is well developed, has many RV facilities and many visitors this time of year. Semi truck activity is intense from Redmond south as several east/west HWYs (HWY20, HWY 31, HWY58) intersect and a main route into Hwy 5 in Weed CA.

There are lots of roadside attractions, mainly volcanic phenomena, and several nice lakes and reservoirs with state and federal campground. Weed CA tends to be a major semi-truck stop, check-out Shasta City, Dunsmuir, Anderson CA or for overnight.

If the fires stop, check out cutting over to HWY395 on OR HWY 31 from Hwy97 at La Pine, OR, to Reno then to SOCAL on 395. Be shure to gas up at La Pine.

If fires continue, consider HWY5.
