New 2021 2401RG TV Coming Off the Wall

Hi
On our trip home from the dealer screws fell out of the TV mounting bracket above Dining Table. Talked to dealer and Winnebago support and they suggested I take it to dealer for fixing. That however is a 3 hour drive one way so would like to fix myself. Winnebago support provided me a diagram of the wall (interior EGS backer locations) but no real info as to where the bracket that holds the tv and arm is supposed to mount on wall. Actually they provided a generalization that is wrong. I can make my own assumptions but was hoping I could get a 2401rg owner to measure for me. I am looking for how far from the ceiling the top row of three screws in the mounting bracket are.
Can't say I am overly impressed with Winnebago support in either not being able or at least unwilling to provide that info. I appreciate the help. I can provide more info if needed.

Hi Dave,
Looking at this video, it must be that there are at least a couple of the screws still holding your TV on the wall, right? Can you take a picture of the situation to show us more?
Welcome to the forum.
Thanks, Eagle5

The top 3 screws on my mount are 8" below the ceiling. A quick check with a magnet (the sheet metal backing is ferrous) shows you could probably be off by over an inch in any direction and be fine.

That is interesting. Mine were at about 9 5/8s down. I have a sidewall pic that Winnebago sent me. It shows the backer pieces in the wall. My mounting plate has 3 rows, screws are 3 inches apart with the arm in the middle. At 8 inches down the top row could have two screws in the backer strips. The second row would have its 2 screws in the first horizontal backer and bottom row would be in nothing but wall. It looks to me that may be the best I can do unless I can move it down and have top row in first horizontal Backer and bottom row in 2 horizontal backer but not sure if tv is to low then have to go do some measuring. How far over from the doorside edge of the door is the first row of screws on yours? I would guess around 36" or 37" Thanks for helping out.

I thought this might be helpful as well. Picture of mounting bracket.

Yours looks the same as mine. The top row is as you state, outside screws into the vertical backing strips, the middle screw with no backer. The middle row, both screws are into the vertical backing. The bottom 3 screws are into the horizontal backer. I verified my backer locations with a small neodymium magnet. My right side screws are 36" from the door, measured to the door trim.

Hi Dave,
Wow; that PDF really clears things up. You now know exactly where the two vertical 3" wide x 10" long EGS Backers are located, in addition to the horizontal 3" wide EGS Backer.
1.) take the bracket off the wall
2.) lay painter's tape at the estimated installation location
3.) mark where the original seven screw holes (which pulled out) are located. This is three down each side, and one in the bottom-center. The top-center hole is not used.
4.) measure from the entry door opening to mark the centerline of your vertical EGS Backers. These will capture four screws:
36½" = 35" + 1½"
42" = 40½" + 1½"
5.) measure up from the floor to mark the centerline of your horizontal EGS Backer. This will capture three screws:
63¼" = 62" + 1½" - ¼" for flooring
6.) as recommended by Old Navy, double-check your locations with a magnet
7.) drill pilot holes appropriate for your self-tapping screws.
Good luck; Eagle5
P.S. I'm too slow. Old Navy has a great answer above.

Hi Old Navy
So things seem off to me. If your top row of screws are at 8' down from ceiling. those sit in the middle two upright 10in tall backers. The second row would be 3inches down from there at 11in from ceiling which would have them in the horizontal backer strip that starts at 62 in from the floor and goes to 65in. Three inches down from there would be 14in from ceiling that fall in the 4in space between the two horizontal backer strips. Am I missing something?

Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,
I believe if you tape off the area and use the magnet as Old Navy suggested, you should be able to trace-out with a pen all outlines of the EGS Backers. Before you reinstall the TV bracket, make sure that it is low enough that the TV top clears the ceiling. Mark your holes, drill pilot holes, and you are off to the races.
No worries.

Yes, the bottom screws are 14" from the ceiling and 63" from the floor. This coincides with the bottom of the cabinets that are on either side of the TV, and are supported by the same backing strip. The ceiling is 77" above the floor (63"+14"). The drawing you posted appears pretty accurate as far as I can tell. Thanks for providing that! Still, I would "trust, but verify", and double check with a magnet before drilling.

Ok so I went and got a magnet. Best I can tell I have the two upright strips at the cabinet edges. In the middle between the cabinets I appear two have nothing that attracts the magnet until I get to 65in above the floor. So it appears that the two middle egs backer pieces that are supposed to be in the wall from ceiling to 10 inches down arent there. That would explain why it didn't hold there and the bottom row on my TV was mounted just below the Horizontal backer strip that runs from 62 to 65 inches up from the floor. Guess I need to call my dealer. sigh!

Well, that sucks. I have been wondering about the composition of these Azdel panels, and what fasteners could be used with them. I'm not sure how much help the dealer will be, but let us know what they or the factory come up with.

When I had a similar issue, the dealer just took some plastic anchors such as the type to attach screws in drywall and pushed those in. The screws have help solid ever since.

Well that is an interesting fix. Was this for the TV mount? So you had missing backer strips as well? Still talking to dealer and as it is a 3 hour drive to get there I haven't taken it to him yet and may not until spring.

I found out the hard way on my 2017 View that Winnebago allows toque screw drivers in the hands of workers with an IQ of less than 100. On my MH I had to virtually take all the screws out with bare fingers then glue and plug the holes and reinstall the screws. The workers over torqued the screws and augered most of the wood/material out and the screw would hold nothing. By using self tapping wood screw, the operator uses way to much force to start the screw and by the time the screw entered the wood, most of the wood is pulled out.

Did you try a standard Stud-Finder to find the backer strips? It should be able to sense the difference in density.

The inner side of the wall panel is 1/8" luan, bonded to styrofoam. It helps that you are securing a large flat metal plate to the luan sheet with 8 anchors. The backing strips spread the load over a wider area, but the self tapping screws probably provide much less load support than wall anchors. Whatever option they select, make sure the factory authorizes the repair procedure in writing.

I don't really use the TV, but just thinking about this mount on thin luan ply reminds me to make sure I secure the TV every time I break camp.

Here's a factory video of a sidewall being manufactured.

Thanks for the video that helps me understand what is supposed to be there in the wall. Those EGS backers don't add very much for additional support but apparently its enough. But I agree I think I am going to get in writing the fix. As you stated I don't really care about the the TV but would like it to be mounted so it doesn't cause me problems. It can come in handy for distracting Grandkids at times though.

Thanks, Dave
