Micro Mini BBQ Grill Mount

Hi Everyone -

I bought a Micro Mini this summer and love it.

I needed a new BBQ so I just bought a small Flame King grill ‘ for RVs ‘ so I could take advantage of the propane port on the lower side of the trailer.

The grill can either be used free standing or the stand actually converts to hang on the side of the trailer. ( obviously not when under tow ) it uses an included 21 inch aluminum rail that you screw into the side of the trailer using 4 screws. The rail is about 21 inches long. The grill is just 22 lbs.

My question is this: Will the siding of the trailer support the load? I don’t really know what the siding is made of and surely there is no “ backer “ behind it like for mounting an outside TV. So the wall thickness of the siding would have to carry the load. Spread across 4 screws, that’s less than six lbs of load per screw and it’s mostly a shear force as opposed to one that tries to pull the screws straight out.

I’ve included a photo. Any advice would be appreciated. I don’t want to blindly put holes in the side of my new trailer. Thanks

Ps I didn’t include in the picture the actual stand/mount that offsets the grill from the side of the trailer.

The siding on the trailer cannot support any load. You must install that rail into the aluminum studs that make up the wall like 2x4s.

Some times when it's cold overnight and there is condensation on the sidewall of the TT you can see where the studs are. And others say that a stud finder will work too. But I've never tried it.

I once owned an Arctic Fox TT that had the rail pre-installed at the factory and came with a grill made for it. Then I bought a new Arctic Fox and it had a sticker on the outside wall of the TT indicating that they had put blocking in the wall at that spot for the rail installation.

WBGO doesn't do that, but you should be able to find the studs... hopefully.

My Minnie has a spot marked "Backer Location". It's just a piece of sheet metal sandwiched between the fiberglass and foam insulation, meant to support an outside TV mount. It's more to give the screw something to grab than to provide any structural support. That said, there is no way I would mount a BBQ within 5 feet of a trailer wall. I have seen bumper mounts that swing out a few feet, but even that is a little close.

I’d definitely use the legs rather than the trailer mount. I’ve got a camp chef (single burner) and just use the legs. It only takes an extra minute.

As someone that used a BBQ on the side of the my Travel Trailer for 10 years on two different trailers I fail to see any problem with it. But everyone has to suit themselves.

Exactly my thoughts. You get that grill too close to your siding and you’ll wish you just moved the grill off to the side.

My biggest issue would be getting grease all over the side of the rv!

Gee, in the 10 years I used a system like this on my Arctic Fox travel trailers I never had grease, flame, soot or any other problems.

Once I worried about smoke possibly going up to an open awning... but then it didn't have any effect up that high.

We very much liked that exact Grill and bought two over a 10-year period. Olympian 5500.

My concern is just about the wall mounts. I personally would always be nervous about screws that only gripped the exterior luan/Azdel sheet... but I tend to worry about things excessively.

It must be installed into framing or backing, that’s for sure.
