Winnebago View looking to tow a dingy

Snowbird from Wisconsin to Arizona. Rented a car this year, looking at towing next year. Wwe have a 2018 Winnebago View 24D. I would appreciate insight and opinions on moving to towing. We would need to replace an existing car for a towable vehicle. Thanks

We tow a GMC Terrain with our View--at just about 4000 pounds.

We have also moved your post to a more appropriate forum in hopes you can get more help and answers.

If you don't mind driving a standard transmission car, most small cars can be towed 4 down. Automatic transmission cars are getting more limited each year. Jeeps are a possibility but they are very heavy and put you at or over your tow limit of 4200 lbs.

There are multiple towing guides - FMCA and Motorhome Magazine are two that I can think of. Lots of online resources as well.

So, what do you want to drive and new or used?

Just keep in mind that the "toadability" of any vehicle is highly dependent on the model year. Just because a 2010 model is towable 4-down, the 2011 and newer ones may not. The reverse, although less common, could also be true. If two transmissions were offered, one might be OK and the other not.

When we first started flat towing behind a Class C we bought a used Fiat 500 with a manual transmission. It towed great. Cost was cheap - because they don't hold their value well. I think we paid $8000 for the couple year old Fiat. It's a super lite tow and pretty fun to drive.

When we got our Class A we decided to sell the Fiat and get a new towable daily driver. The Fiat sold pretty quickly for $6,700 to a couple that wanted it to flat tow behind their Class C.

We tow a 2016 Lincoln MKX which has been a good daily driver AND a good Toad.

After renting cars for a year and a half, we too decided to start towing a car with our 2016 Navion 24M. In our case, we selected a 2017 Honda Fit EX with 6 speed manual transmission. We got a lot of tips from the View/Navion Group on Yahoo, and set ours up with a Roadmaster Baseplate with Sterling Towbar. For brakes, we're using a SMI Stay and Play system. Flip a switch and the brake system is ready to tow. After a lot of practice, we've got the departure process down to about 5 to 6 minutes to connect the towbar turn on the braking system and we are ready to tow. The Fit is around 2500 lbs.

Fiat Tow

I have a Navion and tow a Fiat 500, manual. Great Car. Lots of room for 2. Weight is below limit so no braking system is necessary. Good choice.

1. You will want to flat tow. That has been the best for me. 2. A good braking system is a must have even if you purchase a lightweight vehicle (my little Sonic is under 3,000 lbs). Happy towing

First of all, buy your four down (all 4 wheels on the ground) towed vehicle with caution. MAKE SURE ITS ACTUALLY TOWABLE... e.g. Honda CRVs up to model year 2014 are towable, 2015-onward are NOT because they went to using a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). In fact, I believe no CVT optioned vehicles are 4-down towable. Make sure to READ the Good Sam towing guide. There's one published for each year (free online). For 2019: http://webcontent.goodsam.com/motorh...inghyGuide.pdf. It'll save you unmentionable headaches if you choose the wrong towed vehicle (burned out transmissions, etc.). Also, READ the towed vehicle's OWNER'S MANUAL on towing it as it may have special guidelines for that model year. AND, don't forget that you have to buy and have installed a tow bar system matched to your towed vehicle (e.g. Blue Ox) AND a breaking system to place INSIDE the towed vehicle to operate the foot brake to make up for the add'l breaking force required because of your towed vehicle's momentum when you stop your RV. The Good Sams guide will cover this need (required by law in most states I believe... finding out from the law after an accident is not a good thing).

As for my experience, I found that our 2007 VIEW (Diesel Mercedes) did a great job at towing our 2014 CRV. It was surely convenient to be able to drive off at anytime from a campground to do sightseeing, etc. without unhitching the View. And the CRV was just one of our daily drivers.

We tow our 1998 Ford Ranger Extended Cab 2x2. 3100lb curb weight, automatic trans. Bought it new with a 4000lb towing package. When we moved out of our tent and into the Class A world, we had it fitted out with a RemCo shaft conversion for well under $1000. Intend to drive and tow it 'til the wheels go square.

It is not perfect, however. SWMBO is convinced the Ranger's bed must be filled with "invaluable finds" that we drag home, stare at for a few days, then call Goodwill to come pick up.
