Vista 21B/Sunstar 21B
After our recent March trip from Maine to Arizona and back (cut short due to the coronavirus issue), we have decided to downsize to something smaller than our 31ft 03 Minnie. While the Minnie has plenty of power, handles well and is relatively easy to drive, it is just not an overly relaxing ride, and isn't that the point of RVing. So we are considering buying an 02 Itasca Sunstar 21B. As I understand it, Winnebago only made around 900 of these Volkswagen Euro-van based Class Cs over 3 years (2002 -2004) under the Winnebago Vista 21B and Itasca Sunstar 21B labels. I tried using the forum's search feature and found very few threads referencing these models. Are there any owners of these models out there who can let us know their experiences, likes and dislikes etc.?
BTW, we plan to keep the Minnie for campground stays here in Maine (we generally have a week per month scheduled throughout the summer with various friends and family) and will use the Sunstar for fall/spring trips around the country.

Don't know if this will help...

This one's for a Rialta which is almost the same animal....
Pros & Cons of a Rialta
My personal opinion. We looked at them in 2008, when they were still reasonably young. Our cons outweighed the pros, but the primary one was the VW chassis, for the same reasons mentioned in these threads. I would avoid.
If you want something more economical and relaxing to drive, maybe look at an older View/Navion or similar. If downsizing is the main requirement, I'd go to an older Class B van conversion, Roadtrek, Pleasure Way, or Leisure Travel, on the N/A built chassis. Not the Sprinters.

Thanks for the quick response. I've looked at the Rialta and was not impressed with the interior design. The interior of the Vista/Sunstar on the other hand, is quite similar to our Minnie, just smaller. We used to have a 98 American Cruiser Class B (to small) and then a 97 Born Free 24RB Class C (should have kept it) before getting the Minnie. We'll be trying it out this weekend. The price ($6400), low miles (62000), and a mechanic nephew who works on Volkswagens makes it pretty attractive to me.

If the price and mileage and everything esle are to your liking, I guess it's up to you? The mechanic in the family is a definite bonus.

We just bought 2003 Winnebago Vista 21b as well! We'd love to connect with other owners. We also just started a Fb group just for the Winnebago Vista 21b/Itasca Sunstar 21b fans and owners to make it easier to connect.

Does you 21B have a rear anti sway bar? Mine does not and it really needs one. I'm trying to source a design to build one. Thanks.

Fluidray,
I just got my 21B out of storage. There is no rear sway bar. Why do you think you need one? Staight axle and leaf springs. The suspension air bags on mine are junk so I might replace them this year.

I replace my air bags but the leaf springs have lost their arch. I can have new ones made. Or I thought an anti sway bar could control sway w/o too stiff ride.
Thanks for responding. I will look for the pn and source for the air bags.

My old air bag has TTT airide logo on it.
I called them 928-453-3040 USA 800-223-1779
They said they can provide replacement bags $325 but keep all your old mounting hardware. You have to reuse it.
I purchased bags from another source (cheaper) but I can't find that info. If/when I find it I will share that info.
