Step Issues

Step only works when the engine is running.
Step will not work with key is on
Step will not work with engine off with the switches at the entry door
Any ideas
Thanks
Larry

Possible a problem with the Chassis battery voltage. The steps work off of the chassis (starter) battery and your description could indicate low voltage at the battery. When the Alternator is charging your battery (engine running) then there is enough voltage to operate the steps.

Just a guess, but worth a check. Yes, I realize there is enough power to start the RV and you'd think that would be enough to operate the steps... but start with the easy stuff first is what I always say... or remember to say after I've tried everything else but the easy stuff and find out it was the easy thing.

Step Issues

That makes sense. This started when

I was charging the engine battery the voltage would not
exceed 12 volts

Then no step
Thanks

Sounds like a good time to check along the battery cables for dirty/ corroded cables and there may be several points along the route besides the ends.

If the engine still cranks off of the battery, my first thought would be to lubricate the step pivot points with silicone spray lubricant. Rusty pivots may be over stressing the step motor, requiring more current than normal.

AMP-L-START Starting Battery Charger/Maintainer - Overview Page

Install this, it will keep both chassis and coach batteries charged when you are on shore power or Generator, maybe even solar for that matter . I have one and it does the job.

Can you tell us some of the details about what you mean?

Do you mean the step won't come in, won't go out, or what ?
Since there are a number of things that you might call switches at the door, what are you talking about? Do you mean the switch meant for turning the steps off, so they don't pull in and out each time we open the door? Or do you mean the switch on the door frame that senses the door location?

Due to the safety items built into the way the manual switch, door switch and ignition interlock all work together, there are lots of details that change when the door makes the step open or close.

Mostly they don't want to give you any chance of walking out the doorwithout the step being exteneded and that can make it really confusing if you think you turned it off at the door manual switch!
