Side Entrance Door Disassembly and lock fix 2020 View

How to disassemble the new side entrance door on a 2020 View and fix a locking problem.

Our new View 24J would not automatically lock the side entrance door using the keyfob. The cab doors locked with the keyfob and the side entrance door could be manually locked. The locking solenoid could be heard in the door when the fob was used but the side door would not lock.

I decided to fix this annoying problem. Start by removing the grey plastic shield that covers the door latching mechanism. First work out the four black "Christmas tree" plugs around the door edge. These are a bear to remove and I had to make a special slotted tool out of sheet metal to pull out the black plugs. I slipped the tool under the plug head and rocked them around with lots of pull to get them out.

Photo 6 - The auto latching problem was easy to find, the solenoid was not connected to the latch drive pin.

Photo 7 - I had to loosen the main bolt, (metric) enough to slip the black solenoid drive over the white latch pin. DANGER! This is not a captured bolt. Only a lock washer keeps the main bolt from turning. To tighten pull the main bolt towards you and tighten at the same time. Do not overtighten. Try the internal manual lock (push inside handle towards the door) before re-assembly.

Photo 8 - Success locking solenoid engages locking latch drive. Now the side door lock works with the Mercedes auto-locking keyfob. Have fun!
