We have painted the walls of a Trend 23L in white and green. The original color was the dark brown cabinets with the brown/green wall paper. We used FixAll Gripcoat Bonding Primer and Benjamin Moore Advance Waterborn Interior Alkyd for the top coat. We also sanded the walls and cabinet sides with 220 grit sand paper before applying the primer.
We did not paint the glossy cabinet doors or do the ceiling or floors.
We did:
- Remove all trim pieces, switches, grills, cushioned items, outlets, cabinet doors, draws, carpets.
- Replace the plastic T trim with iron-on wood trim. The plastic stuff was not going to paint well.
- Paint the cloth covered valance above the bed room window. We did not use primer on that as the paint covered well and the cloth retained most of it's flexibility.
- Remove the rubber molding at the base of the cabinet and replace with pine painted to match the cabinets.
- Removed the plexiglas wall panels around the stove top. We put them back afterwards.
- We had the loft bed that comes down so the curtain surrounding that had to come down to paint the top of the walls.
The whole process took about a month of after work time and weekends but some of that was due to needing to wait between coats. If I recall correctly it took 2 coats of the color paint.
Since the painting we've put on about 6,000 miles. Some cracks have shown up along the edges of some of the panel tape used between wall panels but not enough to stand out. Eventually we will touchup but not anytime soon.
Since the walls are all painted white the RV has looked much brighter inside. The cabinets are a darkish green (BM Avon Green) which goes well with the glossy brown cabinet doors/drawer fronts.
