Paint codes & decal sourcing --wc421 rb

URGENT REQUEST FOR HELP

I have the pleasure of owning a 1989 Winnebago WC 421 RB--- 6.2 V8 diesel---
I traveled .lived & worked with her in the Balkans / IRAK / SYRIA etc--intelligence corps and UN press corps.
Now we are retired, I have spent the last 3 years to restore/rebuild her //mechanically she is now 90+%--and I now wish to finish her in the original livre.
In order to achieve a 95+ % condition, I seek the forums for help in locating the original paint codes and a company that can recreate the decals --in the original size and colors.
Do you know how I can achieve that --PLEASE ???
Thank you so much for your help.
You can eyeball us on Facebook " Christian-Frederick Mattner".
Kind regards
Christian

Paint codes should be on the chassis sticker. If not try going online to Winnebago if you have your vin number you should be able to find paint codes and decal info. I did for my Minnie.

You may want to consider painting the designs and lettering instead of the decals. Decals will eventually fade, crack and disintegrate. I have seen several older Winnebagos with the decals removed and painted. They look great and everyone that I've talked to swears by it. Much easier to maintain! Just a thought!

Good luck on whichever way you go!

The chassis sticker is usually on the driver's door or door jamb. That is where it is on my 2007 Voyage. It will contain the paint codes and lots of other very useful information.

Get Painted Instead

1> Call Winnebago. They have always been very helpful, and they still appear to carry many of the original decals.

2> I have a 2005 Winnebago Adventurer. It's decals were starting to peel, fade and look bad so I too wanted to replace them. Went to a local paint guy and he said it would be easier and cheaper for him to simply duplicate the decals in paint. Problem is - those old decals can be really stuck on there, and very hard to remove cleanly (without damaging old surface and surrounding area. For him it was far faster & easier to just sand them all off, prep and prime the entire surface, and then start duplicating the decals in paint. Had a comprehensive book for precisely matching colors (any good body shop should have this). So that's what he did, finishing with a number of coats of clear coat. Now my unit looks better than new and I do not have to worry about decal peeling.

3> If decals still needed beyond what Winnebago had in stock (I still needed ones that simply said "Winnebago" in an older style & font) try ebay. I found exactly what I needed. My painter used only these and clear coated over.

Thanks for your info. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about my 2011 View decals. Winnabago actually had most of them still in stock but wanted over $1300 for just the decals. I’ve been looking at all kinds of other options. I have a couple of questions.

1. Are just the decals painted on or was the whole RV repainted?
2. What was the approximate total cost?
3. What kind of “paint guy” am I looking for? Auto paint?

Thanks in advance for your help!

1> The whole RV was painted. Since it easier to sand off the old decals than try and remove them (even though starting to peel they were still attached with some super strong glue) that meant sanding the entire body area. The painter preferred to do it this way as he could essentially get everything sanded smooth and then prime the entire body. Once primed, he then painted on the white and light brown background areas. Then he masked off the areas where the stripes needed to be replicated and selectively painted those brown and gold colors in. Then he applied the “Winnebago” decals (the ones I found on ebay) and then clearcoated everything with a number of coats. Finally buffed it all.

2> I paid about $10k for it all, but that included repairing some minor scrapes and dings on the some of the lower compartment doors. This was for repainting our entire 38’ coach.

3> Any good autobody painter could easily handle this work. While many try to rip off RV owners (who assume it will be expensive because of the size of the rig) the truth is that RV work is pretty easy compared to auto work. When repairing an automobile owners expect the result to look just like new. That means all body panels have to be perfectly aligned, all body panels repaired have to look perfect, and the paint job has to be flawless in color match and glossiness. But for an RV – it was never really like that to start with. Yes – there are some nice looking RV factory paint jobs when new, but you are dealing with large flat areas that were never perfectly flat & smooth anyway. RVs have few corners and rounded body areas that have to look perfect. The point is – RV body work is less demanding. For an autobody shop the work is simple – they have air powered sanders and buffers, and the work is fast & easy compared to trying to make a damaged Mercedes look just like new.

If you take your RV to an RV dealer for body work most will charge a lot. After all very few have their own body shop – they just farm out the work and take a big % as middle man. So don’t take it to an RV dealer. There are bodyshops that specialize in truck repairs and you can go to them directly. Do some research on local bodyshops to see what work they might specialize in. Get recommendations. Go out and visit various shops and talk with them about what work you want done. If you normally store your RV during winter months that might be a good time to make a deal with the shop to do the job on a low priority basis. They often like that because they will have work to do in between high demand car repairs.

I would be glad to attach photos but cannot - I have no idea how (or why??) this site does not allow uploads and instead wants a URL: reference????

We have contributed to a number of posts regarding solutions to fading, cracking decals. Happy to do so again.

Our decals had been painted over by PO, and that experiment was already failing when we took charge. SWMBO and I stripped the decals (a ton of work, but cheaper than two tons of $$ to pay someone)(besides, good activity at the CG 'til fish start biting again). Then we had a local guy follow the fade lines to paint them back on. Then clear coat over all. Very happy still and we are several years down range.

Painting our rigs is not rocket science that requires a long trip to some RV specialist. All the local auto paint shops, save one, offered bid. We were able to find replacement decals, but they just were not cost effective, plus the concern about fitting them to the old fadelines, possibility of needing to renew base cost, etc., etc.
