What road challenges have you heard of? We camp in NY State Parks in the Catskills and Adirondacks all season and aren't aware of any "road challenges".
The Interstates have lanes blocked off from time to time to do repairs. That just slows you down from 65 to 50 for a mile or so. Secondary roads sometimes have one lane sections with flaggers to do the same. Nothing any different than other states though.
Google Maps will reroute you around anything really bad, but that hasn't happened to us in NY.

We just made a trip to Watkins Glen with 0 issues. It was a beautiful drive. I’m not sure what you may have heard, but other than the NYC area, NY roads are pretty decent.

Thanks for straighting me out on this David, now I know I don't have to worry on out trip. Below is the article I was referring to and came from "iRV2" forums. actual campers like your self are what I depent on for the truth. Bob
"New York also has sky-high gas prices and fuel taxes. On top of that, the state has many parkway restrictions and low clearance bridges. iRV2 member momdoc added, “My vote for most unfriendly state goes to New York. Many of the major routes do not allow RVs and many less traveled roads have low bridges and overpasses making it hard to get from Point A to point B at times.” According to this guide from RV Trip Wizard on state road laws, motorhomes and trailers are not permitted on the Taconic State Parkway (the longest parkway in New York). Trailers are not permitted on most parkways. LP gas is also prohibited in several New York tunnels"

We almost made the mistake one time of trying the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut. Big mistake! There’s lots of overpasses with a 9’5” clearance. We luckily found an exit just before it. And to my mistake, it was clearly marked NO TRUCKS OR RVs.

We just left the Niagara Falls area. We did not encounter any road issues. There is some construction near the falls area. Also make sure you take the exit for RV we missed it but our 2021 view is 11’1” and the over pass was 12’.

Daughter lives in Rochester NY and we’ve driven several highways in that area including to Niagara Falls, downtown Buffalo, Watkins Glen SP, old Ft Niagara, and around Rochester. There are a few low clearance bridges on some of the roads. I just plan route on Google maps and then check on Allstays for clearance issues. The main interstates and highways are all fine, it’s the smaller, scenic routes I’ve seen issues with.

My bad for trusting google maps in Connecticut. We too made the Merritt mistake a couple of weeks ago. Off just in time, but spent forever trying to find our way back to the interstate.
In NY, I-684 between Armonk and White Plains heavily pot holed. Rutted construction on I-287 between White Plains and Cuomo Bridge.

Marine. We found the same issues on I-684, and I-287. Those roads are heavily traveled for sure. It seems the further west you go, the better the roads are and less traffic.

We have stayed at Four Mile Creek State Park. https://parks.ny.gov/parks/6/details.aspx
That is a good camping area. You get to use that campground pass to park at the Falls. The Robert Moses Parkway gets you to and from the Falls. The parkway has lots of potholes.
We have not been there for a few years as the border is shut down so we have to remain in Canada.
Always nice seeing the Falls.

If you are coming up through I-79 to Erie PA than on to I-90 East, the NYS Thruway Toll Road starts at the NY line and currently has electronic cashless tolling (no more toll booths). Toll charge for my own little Honda CRV was $4.20 from Fredonia to Lackawanna (South Buffalo) for only 38 miles and included the $2.00 admin fee (check the NYS Thruway web site for your cost on the RV). To bypass all the tolls, take I-86 East (just past Erie PA) to US-219 North at Salamanca NY. US-219 is a good road and turns into a 4 lane highway just before Springville NY. There are no NYS Thruway tolls in the immediate Buffalo area.
If you have time, stop at the Lucille Ball Museum and National Comedy Center in Jamestown NY. Great place to take a break (check out the websites as well) and has an excellent RV Park (Camp Chautauqua on Chautauqua Lake). Should you like to stop at Casinos, there is a Seneca Allegany Casino just before the turn North to Buffalo / Niagara Falls on US-219. Make sure to fill the fuel tank in northern West Virginia as PA and NY fuel prices for Unleaded / Diesel is as high as 60 cents more per gallon. I am back in Western NY 4 times a year and now always take US-219 since cashless tolling started on the Thruway. Just be sure to watch out for the lake effect snow which could start as early as mid October through whenever Lake Erie freezes over! Enjoy WNY as the fall when the leaves are at peak color is a beautiful time to visit.

One more important item is there are Seneca Indian Owned fuel stations in Salamanca NY off I-86 / US-219 which usually are 15 to 20 percent cheaper than all other stations (no fuel taxes).

Parkways
Google/Waze kept trying to get us onto the Taconic State Parkway, wouldn't take no for an answer! Beware, the parkways in the Northeast are beautiful and a great ride in a convertible but they have LOW bridges!
