Need bigger Minnie Winnie?

We have an almost new 2021 MW 22M. It's perfect for drivability, but with family and grandkids wanting to be with us, we're looking at a 31K. Anyone else have comments on the 31K? We only have 3400+ on our 22M, 450 chassis.

I’ve long considered the Jayco Redhawk 29XK - very similar floorplan. Cavernous external storage. If I could have found the Minnie Winnie 31k I would have looked hard at it. However, the 26T was there neck and neck w/ it for what we were looking for. A local dealer had the 26T in stock and wasn’t being unreasonable w/ the price.

Only thing, for all the external storage you get, neither Jayco nor Winnie could seem to figure out how to get a few more cabinets or what not INSIDE the rig. Just a consideration we had with that model, passing it along to you.

I have a 31k and absolutely love the floor plan. It’s a little tight in the bedroom area, but not having a slide keeps the weight down and allows for the extremely large rear storage compartment. The living area is huge with a lot of counter space. It was longer than I wanted, but I cannot find a floor plan I like more, even in the larger class A’s.

Doh!, yes there is a large living area slide. There is not a slide in the bedroom like most others in the same type floor plan. Sorry for the confusion.

Resbiker, interesting that the size of the black and gray tanks on the 31K are much smaller than on your 22M. Is that important to you based on how you normally camp?

Yes, I've noticed that too. I think the bigger the better regarding tanks, but not a deal killer.
It all drives one crazy deciding on small, B+ or C rigs. This 22M is probably good enough for wifey and I to cruise around in. That slide out bed is somewhat inconvenient, but survivable. We have to adjust to the fact that we need to bring along only what is needed for what we will be doing...boondocking, slab camping, driveway humping, etc. I've been in the habit of cramming just about all "just in case" cooking gear such as dutch ovens, griddles, etc. The 22M doesn't have a lot of storage, so using a hitch mount rack with a trunk. It's definitely a "one butt" kitchen area, reminding me of the pick up camper days.I've got to think of perhaps installing a flip up/down counter extender. There's just no counter space.
The 31K, with the extra 9-10 feet for the bedroom and more living space is tempting, but dang, I might just have to stay small. So, mine is 24', and another 5' hitch mount storage gadget = about 29 total on the road feet. Almost 31' !

I've been considering a cargo box on the back hitch for my rig as well; either a Rola or a Stowaway2. However, I'm concerned all that weight in the back hanging off the hitch will negatively impact my steering by unloading the front axle. Also, from ample past experience w/ Class C's, its really easy to overload the rear axle on the Ford chassis, but awfully hard to use up all the capacity on the front axle. A cargo carrier on the rear hitch is dead weight all born by the rear axle.

Why go from a 22M to a 31K? Did you consider the 26T, which is right in the middle?

Hi Resbiker,
Because you wisely purchased the 22M on an E-450 Chassis, you have a fantastic tow vehicle. Why not get a small travel trailer to tow on the back of your 22M, for when you take the kiddies? You also might find some of the modifications I did to my 22M of use regarding counter space, etc. Click <Statistics> and <Find all threads started by Eagle5>:

Thanks, Eagle5

Our 2015 31K and has been used while pulling a toad on round trips over 2,000 miles without problems. We have experienced comfortable space for my wife and me, a medium size dog and 2 cats during 10-week trips.

We'd recommend the 31K.

This is the very reason I always encourage my friends to buy used and learn what is important to you and how you actually use your RV. Then you can sell it and buy what you have discovered you really need and want and you won’t take such a financial beating.
My dealer says most of his customers have 2 foot itis. He means that every year they buy a new RV that’s 2 feet longer.
Enjoy your new RV.

Happy with our 31K

We have a 2014 31K that we are very happy with. It is very roomy and comfortable. Typically we travel with two dogs and there is plenty of room for all and enough room to host another couple. It is fairly easy to drive, I have no problems backing into sites and it tows ok.

Jopopsy - our hitch rack is aluminum with an attached lightweight box. No handling problems loaded with firewood or other misc. stuff.

09 Harley…..good advice for sure! I keep learning the hard way sometimes. It’s smokey here in Montana, but doing an all day ride on my ‘21 Road glide Sunday. Maybe these Covid masks will actually be useful for the smoke!

Not available, wife doesn’t like angled kitchens, no counter space.

Very happy with our 31k. Done quite a few little upgrades but it’s a solid platform with a very useable floor plan.
