Mercedes diesel engines

I'm new with diesel engines. I was told there is a certain year on Mercedes diesel engines that were better than the others and something about using low sulphur diesel. Can someone get me up to speed? Trying to figure out what year model Winnebago view with the Mercedes diesel engine to purchase. Thanks

I bought a non DEF unit i think the Def units came out in 2010 my chassis is an 08 mfg year 09 im no expert some of the sprinter forums may have more help..been very reliable so far

Yes, you need to use Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel, ULSD. But lucky for you, it is the only type of diesel sold in the US and Canada. What you need to watch out for is biodiesel. Most diesel sold is ULSD, 5% biodiesel. It does not need to be labeled as biodiesel if it is 5% or less, however.

Mercedes suggests you stay at a max of 5% biodiesel but you can burn diesel with higher (up to 20%) if you need to. Just switch back to the regular stuff as soon as you can.

The better Mercedes Diesels are the second generation V6 engines which were introduced in 2012? That generation of engine is still used.

DEF is no big deal but it does keep the air cleaner for our babies and grandbabies. DEF engines run cleaner and produce more power than their predecessors. All you need to do is fill the DEF tank every 4-5000 miles.

We Have a 2007 23J on a 2006 Chassis. The 2006 has the T1N motor, a 2.7l in line 5 cyl. No DPF, DEF, regen cycles, or diesel emission stuff. We can burn LSD or big rig heavy diesel, a definite plus for our Baja travels. A bit less power but equal or better mileage, 13 pulling our box trailer and all trips return up the hill to 7000' here in Flagstaff.

We scored it for $39K with 40K miles last fall and have broken her in in Baja for an initial 1600 miles with the next trip in two weeks to head south and pet the whales.
