LP Gas Tank Question

My sensor was not working on my tank so I got a new one. I attempted to back the screws out that hold the sensor (represented by black arrows) in place but they broke off. My question is if I remove the screws (represented by the red arrows) out so I can drill the screws out with that release the gas?

Get to a qualified repair facility. Don't try it yourself. Make a mistake and kill yourself or others. It's not worth it. Even if someone on here tells you it's OK, don't do it. Take it to an RV shop that does propane, or a proper propane dealer/supplier.

I would not introduce heat from a drill bit anywhere near a propane tank! I would take Winterbagoal's advice and seek out a professional.

Another thought is once you have determined the tank is safe is to go with an aftermarket level monitor. We purchased this one and have been very happy:

I can generally tell how many gallons of propane I will need to fill my tank within 1/2 gallon. You can monitor your propane levels on your phone via their phone app.

Along these same lines, I just purchased a 2010 Aspect 28B and during our maiden shakedown trip, we found out it has a frozen propane tank on/off valve (couldn't move it either way). I called several Winnebago service centers and two propane dealers and all said you can't replace just that valve; that you need to replace the entire tank and the sensor. When asked how much that would cost, it was $1,150 and that didn't include shipping or installation. I have no choice but to buy it...

This sounds like the simplest, safest and cheapest solution.

I was a FF for 36 yrs. now retired and seen the results of propane tanks not just catching on fire but exploding, thankfully after the fact. A 20 lb. Propane tank can level a large house, no joking. I agree 100% with "Winterbagoal" please do not do this but bring it to a place that is certified to do the work, I don't care what anyone might tell you, its not worth the risk. Also let us know how you make out getting it repair. Thxs

How often are propane tanks supposed to be certified? I consider that largely BS if the tank has not been exposed to the elements or used by meth manufacturers, but at some point . . ..

I'm no expert but from what I recall DOT tank needs to be recertified every 12 yrs from mfg. date stamped on the tank and depending on how it is recertified adds 5, 7 or 12 yrs.. IMHO its best to start trading in your tank for a filled one since to recertification of a DOT can cost as much as a new one. As for it being BS, I think since no one knows how any tank is stored, used, etc. something needs to be in place otherwise it will be an accident waiting to happen, again IMHO.....:-) I know a local lumber company had an unannounced inspection. The inspector provided them with an out of date tank. And he was starting to fill it. They're permit was suspended for a year and got a heavy fine, Lesson learned..

Propane tanks mounted to the vehicle are exempt from the DOT 12-year inspection rules. Agreed, they should be inspected for leaks, but they do not have to be "certified" and stamped.

The sensor is driven by an internal magnet inside the gauge unit. It really wouldnt have to be secured with screws. I would clean the surface it sits on, then put it in place with tape or glue and see if it works.

What I meant by BS is it really is dependent on knowing the history of the tank. It's not like tires where over X years is bad no matter what. If a tank has been well stored and cared for by one owner and not showing any signs if rust or damage, I don't know of anything in the propane itself that would cause wear on the tank or reduce its strength.

Put it this way. I have a Ford Ranger that is over 30 years old. It is in better condition than many trucks that are only 5 years old. It's all how people care for things.

Just to correct myself I misspoke on the tank requirements for MH. These tanks are built different with slightly thicker walls and designed for stationary installation like a motorhome, etc. to meet strict ASME requirements not DOT. When refilled it's up to the person filling them to visually inspect them to make sure they're safe otherwise they can refill. DOT tanks like 20# for BBQ grilles, some travel trailers, etc. require the recert.. As I stated I'm not an expert hence why I recommended to go to an expert better safe than sorry. Just because it might not appear to have an issue, it may hence the testing to assure it functions as designed. Thanks

Thanks for the update and if you don't have a gas sniffer I'd get one, in fact anyone with a MH, TTT, 5er, even a house that has a grille it's a low cost for one and should be used whenever you turn on, refill or reconnect another heck even travel to a CG. Soap and water might work for some but these sniffers are a cheap safety device. I use mine all the time. Thanks again,

The image looks like a portable propane tank, not an RV propane tank. Is that right?

How does that gauge work? I did not see an explanation in the Amazon page.

It is a stationary tank not a portable. The sensor has wires going to it.
