You probably need to see if the awning is electric. Some of those have an auto-retract. Most manual awnings will have the extra arm as you’re describing.
This past spring we lost our manual awning in a windstorm in FL. The awning tube was salvageable but all the arms were bent. We used LCI Solera replacement arms that are electric. There is not an auto-retract on them but there is an auto-dump (of water that collects on them). There are other models that sense the vibration of the wind on the awning and retract it at a certain point.

Yes Some electric awnings are self retractable, but I would not depend on them. When leaving the area even for 15 min I retract mine, have seen to many self retractable awnings not retract and get damaged. Never leave any awning untended for any length of time.

I have been searching for (it doesn’t exist I believe) a wifi adapter that I can figure out how to get into the awning electrics that will give me a timed switch to the close circuit. Something that I can push a button and make it activate for x number of seconds (I don’t know exactly how long it takes for my awning to close). I’ve been searching for an EE that understands circuits and programming that could do it as well. That way when I forget to close it (I always do) I have a way to do that remotely.

Your best bet might be to contact the awning manufacturer and ask if they have an electronic retract module that can be added. The new View/Navion awning is very similar to the Carefree awning I had on an earlier coach which had auto retract. As soon as the awning would oscillate up and down a few inches, the awning would retract.

Thought of losing the awning never crossed our minds when we first started traveling on the coast. Not until we checked into a place in July that had a number posted on the bulletin board of how many awnings had been lost THAT year so far and it was 19!
Electric awnings really are vulnerable in windy conditions. Some have auto retractors, most don’t. Some have optional addons to make them automatically retract.
Keep in mind, the auto retract devices don’t react to wind but awning movement. And, that you can still lose your awning in sudden strong wind situations.
