Well, now I'm swinging back towards doing a central vacuum. Thanks everyone!

I meant Dirt Devil. Not sure where red devil came from. Old age?

I found that most handhelds are just too weak. We full time in a 38' Class A, and have carried with us a small Craftsman shop vac (the smallest they had with a 2 1/2" hose). It has tons of suction and we are able to use it out in out Toad as well. It can also function as a wet vac - a feature we have found handy a few times. By installing the hose on the outbound air flow it functions well as a blower as well - another feature I have used many times to clear away dirt and leaves from around the RV. Yes - it is powered by 120v AC, but we have a generator or use our inverter to run it, and that is why it is much more powerful than a hand held.
Cannot imagine the problems of trying to install a central system into an RV after the fact - as a factory install all piping would be run under the floor. Besides - I have heard from some who have had the Red Devil central system built in that it is not that powerful, very expensive, and you have to deal with long flexible hoses which have to be stored somewhere when not in use.

We had a central vac in our previous motorhome and had one installed in our current unit. About the time we bought this MH, we got a Dyson at home for little clean up jobs. It started travelling with us and the CV has never been used again. Of course we then bought one that stays with the MH. I am not sure why we even carry the hose - I guess if the Dyson dies. I usually do the floors and I hated the CV. The hose is heavy, catches on things and the strong vacuum is always trying to make the hose shorter, so constantly fighting back.

I have the Dyson V6 Fluffy, got it for $180. It comes with the head for hardwood floors and an additional power head for carpets and furniture. It lasts 20 minutes or so. I had a central vacuum in the house and still pulling around that hose was awful. They make the V8 Dyson that lasts even longer if you think you need it but it costs more.

Overkill for our rig
We had the central in our Fifth Wheel. I agree that the hose was too heavy and too cumbersome. I purchased a cordless Hoover and love it! Even use it at home for the downstairs so I don't have to haul equipment up and down the stairs.
I had a central vac in a previous home and didn't really like it either. If I could have a shorter hose and an outlet in every room, but otherwise it was a hassle.

I put a dirt devil vac in mine, from rv upgrades. Small box, long hose. I put mine under the diner bench, was not hard at all. Works great, very powerful, out of the way. Hose goes like 30 feet.

Those central vacuums are not very hygenic. A lot of dust will be kept in the hose and you cannot clean it. Best for growing bacteria and catch a cold.
I do not recommend it.

Last 2 before this one had central vac. I see opinions vary and that's the way life is but I always hated getting out the hose and head and then putting it all back up. We use a portable and it takes 5 seconds to stash it in outside compartment.

I can certainly store my hose in a smaller area than those stick vacuums.

I can agree. 3 motorhomes with built in vacuums and used them frequently and the hose and power head required little storage under the bed.
