What is a big rig?

I recently went from a 19' class B to a 41' class A (and lovin it!). But, suddenly its important to know what CGs I can fit in. The directories I've seen list, under park details, "big rig", and then answer either yes or no. But - what exactly is a "big rig"? I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

So - can someone please tell me what length or size defines a "big rig"?

You qualify ---- and now have an ironic screen name. LOL - not sure that it's universally defined. There is a "big rig" CG guide available but overlooks places you can go. Best to call ahead. Some places have some - and may not have any at any given time. YMMV
Congrats on the move up.

I think you will find that there is no real answer to your question, as there is no real standard. We have seen campgrounds who list themselves as "big rig friendly" where our 35' mh doesn't stand a chance of getting through safely. Some places have only one or two sites for larger units, and especially in public parks (state, etc) without site specific reservations, those sites will be taken by others before you arrive. Others places with large enough sites will have narrow roads with sharp turns and low hanging limbs.

One good source for information, IMO, is RV Park Reviews :: Home. This peer review site is used by a lot of folks and, if they have problems with their larger unit, most times will say so emphatically. Another useful way is to use Google Earth or Bing for campground views. This will sometimes give you useful information about whether you should fit.

The term came from the "trucking World" and has moved into the rv world as these units got larger (up to 45') and now also have large trailers hooked to them. Old campgrounds that are still around do not have pull-through camp sites as these kind of pull through sites were made for the bigger rigs and if the were towing these new sites would allow for it. Most all campgrounds have made pull throughs for this reason and after parking your big rig sometimes as you stroll around the campground you walk through the older sections that would not permit you to drive through there. This is just my explanation for your question.

We usually call the CG and give them our length (40') and ask if we are OK. Some CG have way too many definitions of what is or is not big. In Breckenridge Co last summer we called ahead and asked if they could accomodate our 40 footer and they said yes. Well, we got in and got in a lot of trouble with huge boulders and sharp turns that this thing is not designed to do in the first place. Impossible to back out (too many trees huge boulders etc) and did a number on one basement door and one side panel with a large tree limb.

Never again (I hope)

If its bigger than the rig you have, then it's a big rig!

Many times it's not just related to the campground proper, it's the roads leading in as well? An example might be one where you travel down 5 miles of choppy dirt road only to be faced by an old narrow bridge with a restrictive load limit on it? Excessively steep grades are another "gotcha"!

I watch for that "big rig capable" endorsement myself...

But some of them barely have room for anything that size

That's funny! Not quite OT. I still have the Falcon190, but mine's a different model than your picture. But I'll keep the same name as a salute to my first real RV. And in answer to my OP, seems calling ahead is the best answer!

Guess I need to change my screen name to 91Airstream190B then since that's where I started out in '91. Those B days cannot be replaced - but we sure love 38 feet and 3 slides. LOL.

According to the Good Sam RV Travel guide for 2013 I just got page 123

They define big rig as a park with 25% of the sites this criteria
Min 14 ft overhead clearance
12 ft wide roads
50 amp sites
site min of 24X60 ft and adequate site access

There you have it the first time I have seen a detailed explanation in writing

That's why I like "Wannabe". No matter what I own, the name will always be appropriate for the next RV.

As others have said, there's no standard but (probably since I own a 40DP) I've always thought of 40' as "big rig".

Some CGs certainly do take liberties with the "big rig friendly" tag too.
