Tire chains or cables

How many folks carry tire chains or cables for their motor home? Our Winnebago Sunstar is 18000 pounds and we are planning to travel mid October from Calgary to Spokane then further west to the coast and south to California.

Wow, great question. I'm sure the best advice is to avoid these conditions as much as possible, but I know firsthand that ice, snow, and hail can come up out of no where, even in the summer as I have experienced multiple tines in the Sierras.

Hope you/we get some advice from some experienced RVers.

We did, on the Travco and the Suncruiser, and used them several times when we took the moho skiing in the Sierra. Not yet on the Sunstar. We've had it just a year and have had no plans to go near snow yet.

If you get them, practice putting them on first during the day when it's clear and dry. Then, when you think you're good at it, do it at night, in the dark, with someone randomly spraying you with a garden hose.

At least test them enough to make sure that they fit before you need them.

On the Travco, it was so lightly loaded in the back I could run the inside dual up on a 2x6 block to get the outside one off the ground to make it easier.

That didn't work on the Suncruiser, so I jacked it up with the tire changing jack we carried.

There's no thrill quite like chaining up in the slush along side a 2 lane highway like CA 168 on the way to China Peak.

I carry AutoSock, https://autosock.us/products/sizing/
I was told they last about 400 miles. But if you have limited clearance these work good..
I carry them since in Washington State you are required to have chains on certain highways in the winter.. These are approved by WSDOT

No advice on chains but as of Oct. first ..

No advice on chains but as of Oct. first you must carry chains if you are planning on driving through any of the mountains of BC. Pretty sure Alberta and Washington state will have a similar rule.

Sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy

Look into Snow Socks. Chains can break and beat up your wheel wells. Snow Socks are easier to install.

IMHO none of these are going to get you out of trouble in the mountains of Washington State. They will make you legal (WSP legal).
Plan on sitting out some storms. We've already had snow on Snoqualmie and Stevens passes.

I have used cables(easier to install and store). They are mandatory to have going south (I5) in Oregon. Not necessary on but available.

I carried chains in winter to comply with the laws on my 43' coach but would never install them. Don't wreck your rv.
