Surround Sound Problem '05 Journey
I have a 2005 Journey. My surround sound does not kick in (with radio or TV) unless the ignition key is in the accessory position. Is this normal? If so, is the surround sound amp powered by house batteries or engine? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

on our 1998 beaver the amp is powered off the inverter because it is 110V , the inverter draws its 12V from the house batteries, because you would not want to leave yourself stranded if you ran down the chasis battery

That certainly makes sense, as far as power source. Still have the question regarding ignition switch position. But, thanks for the info re the source.

The RADIO POWER SWITCH will switch between chassis and coach battery feed to the radio and amp.

No, that is not normal. It should work regardless of the ignition switch position. I have no idea which bank it is powered from, but am pretty sure it is 12v only ...no inverter involved. There is a dash switch for house or engine battery operation of the radio. there's is a switch, probably in the right side overhead cabinet, to select radio or TV for the surround sound. The catch on many is that the radio has no internal speakers, so if the switch is set for TV, there is no radio output even if the radio is on.
I would suspect that someone has rewired yours for some reason.

As Paul mentioned there are four combinations of your switches
Setting DASH Overhead Cabinet
1........... House ....Radio
2 ...........House ... TV
3 ...........Chassis ..Radio
4........... Chassis ...TV
If you are getting sound from the radio when it is ON and the ignition is ON AND no sound (from the surround sound) for the TV ... then your switch setting must be 3rd one. Try flipping the dash switch to the house batteries ... now you should be getting sound even when the ignition is OFF...
It doesn't make any difference whether the dash switch is House or Chassis if the switch in the overhead cabinet is set to TV.
If this is not the case then someone has rewired something
P.S. This assumes that the house batteries are ON

I am having almost the same problem in my 2005 Airstream 396 XL. While on shore power or battery with the ignition switch off the dash radio works in the surround sound speakers. But when the ignition switch is turned to start the engine the sounds goes off in the surround sound speakers. The power to the radio is still on because it screen lights up. Turn the ignition to off sound comes back. I have not seen a switch as such in either of the 2 overhead cabinets. I will have to take another look.
