Replacing the TV in a 2000 Journey 36G

I have a 2000 Journey 36G. The TV i that is in between the front cabinets. It's one of those old TV's that weigh a ton. I took it out and now I want to fill in the space somehow and mount a 32 inch smart TV.

I can not tell you how it got done, as previous owner was nice enough to do it for me.

It looks like once the old tv is out a piece of wood either 2/4 or 2/2 was screwed to each side of the cabinet about 2-3 inches from the front. Then a piece of 1/2-3/4 plywood was cut to size and mounted to the the back wood.

An access hole was put in so the wires could be pulled through. A flat tv mount was used to hold tv to the new back wall.

Hope this helps or gives you ideas

I did something similar in our old Itasca. I used a bit of 1/2" ply with a nice veneer on it, radiused the corners, put some edge banding around it, and stained it to get it sort of close to the existing wood. To that, I attached a wall-mount TV arm so I could move the new TV around a little bit as needed and then put a hole in the center of the plywood for the cables. The original hole for the tube TV had some trim around it which I removed and then I used that space to mount some french cleat on the top and a small dot of Velcro on the bottom. The french cleat was there to hold the new TV panel in place and that little bit of Velcro was to keep the panel from swinging back and forth with the movement of the coach. It was a very good and solid solution, but it also allowed me to quickly and easily get into that overhead compartment if something needed to be serviced.

I took out the cabinet above my swivel seat (which was virtually worthless and a head-banger), cut it down to fit, and bolted it in place. I rehung the back four inches of the cabinet and used it to mount the flat screen. Looks great! Let me search around for pictures.

^ This was my project. If you have that cabinet above the swivel chair, it's a very clean modification. Cheers!

Roger,
Many Winnes and Itascas have quite a few similarities in construction and floor plans. I'm one of those that did a complete TV/sound system change out on our '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the CAT C-7 330HP. The front TV install and at least some wiring is very similar on many Winne Vectras and Journeys as it is on Horizons and Meridians.

If you've already removed the Sony boat anchor then, do you still have the giant iron structure still in place? Some Winne/Itasca remodelers remove it and some don't. I did. It took three different kinds of saws to get every inch of it that I wanted out of there. It was designed and built, in our case, to hold a 108 lb Sony. I know, I weighed it. Once I got that pile of junk steel out of there, I could proceed with the install of a Samsung 32" Smart TV.

I have pictures and steps of exactly what I did if you'd like to see them, and for me to go farther in my explanation. The way I did it, I used the 4-screw system that's part of the back of the new Samsung.

TV Options

Just Re tv options: I’m very pleased with the two Sylvox 12v Smart TV’s for RV’s I replaced my 32” & 28” electric TV’s with. I got the newest models of each (that do not have a DVD player like older models.) They work with OTA channels without having to fire up Gen at rest stops & even overnights at Walmart or Cracker Barrel. Of course the Google TV ‘Smart’ part requires electric hook up or Gen.

If you will please send pics and how-to. You can send to my email if that is easier. It's [email protected]. One of the problems I am looking at is the bottom of the TV holder is bowed out. Was thinking about just cutting this part off and doing something to with hole that is left. Would like to see what you did and see if this is similar to what I have in mind.

I'm in agreement with MadMaxWinnie (great name). The original location is the worst possible location for viewing from the couch. My Suncruiser is similar in layout and I've had a plan to install a cabinet in place of the swivel chair and have the TV on a raising and lowering mechanism. Not having to look up at a TV screen is ergonomically better.

If you're stuck on the original location, make sure you install an articulating mount so you can angle the TV as much as possible towards the couch for more comfortable viewing. That's been my interim solution.

BobC. Thought about that also. Even bought the articulating mount for the TV. Just trying to figure out a place to put it.
