Finally replaced the bulbs with the HID ones from a local car store. After crawling under the front and reaching my short arms up I was able to twist and remove the bulb WITHOUT having to remove the entire unit - despite my initial thoughts to the contrary. The new bulbs are much better, as you'd expect for $ 70 bulbs!
