New Plates

After 9 months, I get a phone call, which I ignored, the first few calls, and finally answered. It’s the DMV saying our plates are in. I had given up on them altogether. Wyatt, our dog, the reason we bought this thing, got it named after him...

They are a direct replacement for the OEM 14x 14 opening. Only thing you have to make sure, is if you have enough clearance, as the fans I put in have a larger footprint on the roof due to the automated cover.

Talking Lighted Assist Handle

Been wanting to do this since forever. A lighted assist handle just like the $500,000 rigs! She’s all grown up now...

I would have used the existing handle, but it doesn’t come apart in order to insert the light, so I just bought the exact replacement that does. It comes with a white light, but I wanted a blue one.

Easy install. I tapped into the outdoor light switch, which I have replaced with a motion sensor light, so it only come on when there’s motion, if you want, or, you can also flip the switch just once and it stays on, flip it twice and the patio light goes onto motion activated mode.

LOL, that would be odd to have the motion sensor inside. It’s the outdoor porch light I swapped out. Glad to hear from you again.

FYI, we’re all now trying to get all of our plugs on 120v, I think I recall you saying you did that. And details you can share? Thanks!

Ok thanks. I forgot you changed out the porch light.

Yeah been busy here in the desert of all places. But I do try and check in as often as possible. (Believe I had more time on my hands when working for verizon)

About the AC wiring to have all recepticals on the inverter, my method was to actually remove the wires from their respective breakers and connect them to the inverter thru new outboarded 15 amp breakers. This is the messy method as someone on this board took an alternate approach which seemed better. I don't remember who it was nor the method. I will check and see if I can find the post.

Replacement LED Instrument Dash Lights

Well, if you liked that assist handle upgrade, you’re gonna LOVE this one I did today...

What if I told you for about $12.00, you could fix a MAJOR issue with the dash lights? You know, the ones that you can barely see when driving in Daylite conditions.

Well here it’s is. I replaced the T5 small halogen bulbs in the back of the instrument cluster with LED (white) bulbs.

All you have to do, once you have the LEDS, is lessen the cowl that surrounds the steering column,—two Phillips screws at the bottom and two at the top.
Then remove the instrument cowl over the dash. There are three long Phillips screws.
It helps to put the gear shift lever in drive, and the upper cowl can be maneuvered up and out of the way.
Now you have access to four smaller chrome Phillips head screws that secure the instrument dash to the base.
Lay a soft item like a blanket on the steering column, and tilt the instrument cluster down so you now have access to the back.
Locate the brown twist lock halogen bulbs, and remove them one at a time,
Remove the halogen bulb, and replace it with the LED.
Lock the new LED using the OLD base, back in.
Turn the ignition key to the “on” position, and turn on the headlights. You will be able to see of the new bulb lit up in the back. If it didn’t, unscrew the base and rotate it 180 degrees, as the LED bulbs are polarity sensitive.
Replace each one the same way.
I didn’t do the turn signal bulbs, as they flashed too fast, so I left those alone.
Don’t get fancy and try different colors, as the back screen is already green, and you’ll muck up the result.
Notice the difference in the one photo, where I replaced just two of the bulbs on the lower right hand side, as compared to the OEM bulbs on the rest of the display!

YES. They still dim.

The other photos are of the white LED strip I put in for daytime driving as well.
Have fun. Total project time i would allocate is about 1-2 hours, depending on your abilities.

Thanks much again

Paying it back. Great to hear you’re doing well.

This is such a no brained simple and cheap upgrade, you could pound this one out in no time.

I’m not even sure the photos represent what a difference this silly change out made...

Wyatt -

Have a Vista that has the same instrument panel. I think that design is inset a bit more so not as hard to see during the day BUT... I can't tell is it always backlit or only when the lights are on. I'd live to put the LED's in mine if it would be of use during the day and how well do they dim at night?

Thanks,

David

They dim just fine for me. About like before, slightly brighter...

Just finished on mine - the LED gauge cluster. I had some single LED leftovers from my last car that I put in the turn and high beams. They didn't flash too fast and they'll get my attention a bit better - I tried the "one LED" that faced forward and it created hot spots anywhere but those three. You're suggesting the three led ones worked to fill it in the "gauges" perfectly and MUCH brighter! - thanks for the idea.
