Mileage Question (HA!)
We have a W chassis (454 gas) 1988 Chieftain. Don't laugh, but what could we expect for MPG...or would that be GPM?...

On all the motorhomes I have used the mileage varies a great deal with conditions, the main being how fast I drive, with second being terrain.
But the final answer for calculating where to gas and cost has come down to an average to ten miles per gallon.
As I tell folks at the gas pump, "Not good for a car but great for a house".

Not sure about the 454, but I have a 2008 Ford V10 chassis. I loaded the 5-star tune, pull a Mini Cooper Roadster (about 2600lbs) and typically try to keep the speed around 64-65mph. Over 31,600 documented miles I'm getting 6.70 mpg. Lile Richard said above... "Not good for a car but great for a house".

On the 32' with a 454 we used to have it was typically between 6 and 7 mpg.

Our first MH was a 1985 Chieftain 21' with a 454 in it. It averaged 6.7 mpg, including driving across country (NM to NC) as well as multiple trips in NM & AZ. Needless to say we didn't pass up many gas stations since I think it only had a 35 gallon tank.
We called that little motor home "the Beast", that big old V8 was loud, especially when the fan kicked in. Had some good times in it, got us hooked on the RV life style. 20 years later we're on our 5th MH:-)

We bought a 1993 27RQ Brave new (same engine but with EFI). It had a full Banks and ignition coil upgrade and got 9-10 MPG without toad (2010 CR-V), 8-9 with the toad. In 2015, bought a 2008 Sightseer 29R. It's got full Banks and 5-Star tune, getting 7 MPG, toad or no toad. (The Banks does put out more power = loss of maybe .5 MPG.) Learn to drive no more than 60 MPH, it will make a difference.
Also, change your fuel filter, if you haven't.

Good point about keeping speed at 60 MPH. During our trip home from Mesa, AZ three weeks ago, I experimented with speeds from 60 up to 65. 62 turned out to be the best speed. That was on flat terrain with no wind. I leave my cluster read out on average mileage and it works very well.

We have a 38' Adventurer (W22 chassis) with the Workhorse 8.1l engine onto which the Banks systems was installed (Headers, New Air filter, new exhaust, tuning). Towing a car we can get ~7 mpg on flat terrain. If headwind or hills then mileage will come down some.

Gallons Per Minute (GPM) would be easiest to convert at 60 mph (1 mile per minute).
At 6 miles to the gallon, and 1 mile per minute (60 mph), you'd be using 1/6 GPM (about 21.3 ounces per minute).

That's been my experience as well, both with my MH and formerly with my truck and TT. What was frustrating is that CA has a 55 mph limit while towing. I watch my tach and sometimes have to fiddle with the gas pedal a bit in order to get my transmission to shift into it's highest gear. Around 2,000 rpm seems about right for me.

I had a 89 Chieftain with the 454 engine...
Thank goodness I was able to sell it..
Around 7 mpg with a light foot & no tail wind...
It was delaminating (bubbles) which drove me crazy...
Also the inline fuel filter (under the stairs) was plugging up & stalling the engine out after a couple of miles.. :(
Bought a Newmar Dutch Star & LOVE it...

may i Make a suggestion , I just have purchased a gear venors overdrive , it is a simple mechanical overdrive you can get them for an rv, it will give you the torque and power to climb hills with your rv but will also give you the 20 is better fuel economy. they are easy to install. I have one on my sport touring car and just love it .
