Journey Paint Job

Yesterday I delivered my new chrome mirrors to the paint shop and made final color and color scheme selections. They have stripped all the decals from the rig, removed all exterior hardware, and started the process of sanding the beast. They think they will have it done in another 2 - 3 weeks. It looks pretty strange at this stage:

SMLRANGER,

I have seen some of your pictures before of your rig, what was wrong that you had to have a makeover. I thought it looked pretty good. of course at my age, anything looks good....

Great pics. Maybe I missed an earlier post on this but are you having this done locally? What kind of paint are they using? Look forward to seeing the results. Good luck, I am sure it will look great.

Coach is 2002. While it looks fairly good from a distance, up close the unpainted part of the filon is starting to fade and has thousands of hairline cracks. The only way to stop the cracks is to sand, fill and paint it. We've decided to keep this coach and just do not want to see the exterior continue to deteriorate.

We're having it painted at Commercial Refinishers of Durham, NC. They use Dupont automotive finishes and offered to use either Imron 6000 or Dupont base coat with Chroma Premier clear coat. We selected the base coat/clear coat.

Your lucky that your having it painted in North Carolina with some good paint cause I have heard that here in good old California all that they use now for automotive paint is water based paint. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Update: Rather than make this a longer thread with many pics, I've started a Blog in the Blog section to document progress on the paint job.

We have considered having our coach done also. Looking forward to seeing pictures of the finished product.

Coach really looks strange as you say. I am surprised at the reflect-ability of the white with the decals removed and sanding work ongoing.

Some friends had their Horizon repainted at a business in Indiana (sorry, I cannot remember the name). It was re-done in the company's paint scheme and is now a "stealth" Horizon. When you see it, you know the look is familiar but you just can't figure out what kind of MH it is. The only thing left is that the clear plastic handle by the entry door says ITASCA.

The finished job is beautiful, but I would rather have the original Winnebago scheme.

We have a 2003 Journey DL 39 Ft. with the filon showing what SMLRanger discribed. We were looking for a paint shop to do a refinish job on ours but were told about Poli-Glow Finish by a couple friends. We are in Fort Pierce FL visiting our Family and drove over to where the Poli-Glow is manufactured and packaged.
We spoke with the Owner and employees and had their recommended application team come out yesterday to apply the Poli-Glow treatment to our coach.
I stood and watched as they washed the coach, applied the cleaner and let the coach dry. They then began the transformation of our coach. After three coats of Poli-Glow the cracks in the filon had disappeared. With two more coats the coach glistened in the sunlight. If I had not stood and watched our coach as it went through the transformation, I would not have believed it.
There is no trace of any cracks, blemishes, discoloration, just a bright clean white side wall that reflects the sunlight and anything near it. The decals look like they are brand new with no wear showing on them.
We are told that with regular cool water spray washes and terry cloth drying the finish should last a year without any other coating. When it begins to show any aging another coat of Poli-Glow will bring back the current lustre.
We will keep you all posted as time goes by.
I realize this post is off topic but felt compelled to let you know there is another alternative to full body paint.

What's going on? Can't seem to get link to work. How are things going since this post? Do you have anymore pics? Can't wait to see it when it is finished. I don't know what is worse, waiting to see it finished or knowing you can't go camping now until it is.
Good luck!

No new pics beyond what I have posted in the blog. When I was in Durham on Friday, April 30, he had one coach ahead of me that was ready for paint. If he got that one done this past week, I am hoping he is getting mine ready to shoot this week. However, he also had two big trucks doing collison repairs and was prepping a 1966 Ford convertible for paint.
