Mark we are lucky to own these. I have 88,000 miles with very few problems. If you do have any issues Freightliner Tech Services for Chassis problems and Winnebago Tech for Coach problems. They are great and can save you a bunch., just as this site can.

Update:

In spite of the cold weather (35 out today), I got the genset back into the coach. It was not too bad but the genset wanted to tip forward on the jack platform as I raised it (it wanted to tip backward when I was lowering it). So I used a ratchet strap to support the front of the genset and kept tightening it as I raised the jack. If I was to do this again, I would bolt a piece of heavy plywood or some 2" x 4" pieces onto the jack platform to expand the jacking surface.

It is a tight fit and you must get it pretty much perfectly aligned between the brackets. I was able to jostle it some to get all the bolts in the holes....there are 12 bolts.

Reconnected all the wires, fuel lines and the battery cables and held my breath when I pressed the start button. It fired up and ran fine. No drips, leaks or malfunctions.

Started to have snow showers so will wait and install the new heater core tomorrow.

Now to the Heater Core:

Replacing the heater core was pretty easy. This is the newly designed core I got from Winnebago (thru Lichtstinn Motors):

This core has the hose nipples as part of the core. It fit into the box easily since the hose nipples are smaller than the old core which had threaded nipples. Here it is inserted into the enclosure:

Once inserted into the enclosure, all you need to do is hold the box together long enough to get 2 or 3 of those pesky little spring clips on. Install the rest of the clips and you're good to go.

I need to get some new 5/8" heater hose tomorrow then all I need is my neighbor's help to lift the front cap back onto the beast and I will be done!

I hope this thread will be helpful to others who elect to take on these maintenance issues.

Gary, nice job as always. It's almost time to take the beast out again!

I'm getting cabin fever, myself.

Gary: Great job on both the generator and heater core. For your info your new core is the same design as the one I installed on 08. It is still going strong.

Looking at the 32T cap removal thread and the link that led me back in time to here.. Just curious if the replacement core heats any better than the original, AND has anyone here done, or considered additional insulation on the hoses coming from the engine? It gets cold up there in the winter, and the heat out of the vents is mediocre at best.

Jeff, we only used our Journey once after I replaced the core this past winter. I did not notice any difference in heat output. As you know, these diesels don't really put out a lot of heat unless you are running in hot weather or working them really hard.

I had originally posted that I put in my 3rd heater core in 08. Looking back at my records it was 09. It was the new design and has been working since 09. I would recomend any who has a pre 07-08 heater core to replace it if the front clip is removed.

Parts for the genset came from my local Cummins-Onan dealer.

The new heater core came from Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City, IA.

OK, great help here. Does one HAVE to remove the front cap to drop the generator? Looks like an awful big job.

I guess it will depend on the particular coach and how much you have to raise the coach to get the genset out. On my Journey I could have removed the generator without removing the front clip but would have to raise the coach another 10" to do that. With cribbing under the front jacks, I think I could have done that but since I was also replacing the heater core, I had the benefit of having the front clip out of the way. Just take some measurements to see how much clearance below the frame you will need to accommodate the height of the generator plus the jack you have to lower onto.
