Hot water heater

Has anyone replaced their hot water heater with a tankless one?

Your are not going to like this answer....

I had a tankless heater in my Winnie trailer and hated it. The tankless heater that I had did not work with navy showers. It took too long for temp ramp up when the water flow started and the cycle repeated with every off/on of the navy shower. It was also extremely sensitive to water pressure which varies between parks. I ended up replacing the tankless heater with a 6 gallon heater. As a side note, Winnebago told me that they had made a mistake installing that tankless heater as standard equipment on the trailer. The year after we got ours they switched to a 6 gallon heater as standard equipment.

Having said that, not everyone's experience with tankless heaters is bad. Two things I would caution you on that will make a big difference in your experience:

1) Do not use a tankless heater if you are often in situations where you need to conserve water. Our trailer had a small grey water tank so we were always in that situation and navy showers were mandatory.

2) Don't go cheap. The more expensive tankless heater work much better than the cheaper ones. We had a Dometic which was on the low end of the scale. I have heard of good experiences with the Truma brand but those are going to set you back over $1000 plus they do not support DIY installs.

Thanks for the info, I'm scanning the similar threads. So far it seems like it's not a good fit for RVs that are used for boon docking or staying at friends which is a shame.
