FORD Triton V10

We own a 2016 Sunstar 30T with only 34,000 miles. The check engine light came on in SC on our way to Florida.

After 6 weeks of delays waiting for the dealer to get parts from Ford, we were notified that our Itasca was ready for pick up. We drove from FL to SC on December 22nd and picked it up.

The report from Conway Ford states:

Found cylinder 3 intake valve fell into cylinder.

Severe damage from metal contamination in cyl 2 and 3.

Found severe damage to cylinder heads

Found metal in intake.

Authorization for a REPAIR under warranty.

Removed engine. Replaced short block and both cylinder heads. Replaced intake manifold and oil cooler due to metal contamination.
Installed motor. Oil change and road tested.

Service Manager is guessing a bad lifter started the problem.

On a positive note, I have driven the RV with the rebuilt engine about 800 miles in the last 3 days, and the engine runs better than when it was new. It would always over-rev. It feels like it was underpowered from the beginning.

Ughh what a shocking way to start a vacation!!Sorry to hear about anyone having problems on the highways..Glad it is all behind you and insurance covered the bill..I suppose anything mechanical is always subject to failure sooner or later...but we are never ever ready for it...Happy travels.

A bad lifter? I thought that the 3-Valve Triton was an overhead cam design.

I had a transmission problem with my 2015 Ford Chassis with the 5-spd transmission. I never felt this engine worked correctly, although 3 dealers all swore nothing was wrong.

For reasons which made sense at the time, I traded for a 2017 Winnebago Vista. This unit has the 6-spd tranny. But more importantly, the engine (same make and model) just seems to run better and smoother. Particular like cruise control when downshifting no longer goes into the high rpms.

Go figure.

And then to think in 2020 the V-10 goes away and a new V-8 7Liter will take it's place. Suppose to have more horse, more torque, better MPG's. So for a couple of years there will be a unproven engine being put into gas Class A's & C's

May just need to be thankful Ford is staying in class A chassis market. I don’t think it is the strongest segment of rvs. Plenty of time left to get a V-10

I have had two MH's with the V-10. The 2006 unit had the 4 speed trans and my 2019 unit (2018 chassis) has the 6 speed trans.

I have had great experience with both... but this 6 speed is a welcome improvement. Took some getting used to but I really like it.

I like the 6-speed transmission too, but it tends to downshift at the drop of a hat. On our next trip I think I'll try using the tow/haul function more often to see if that has a positive effect.

The "new" engine will be in PUs and medium trucks as well. Won't take long to be proven/disproven. There will be a LOT of them in service.

Are you sure that your 2006 had the four speed? There were no 2005 MY chassis built, and the production shifted to 2006 MY chassis build in mid-2005. The 2006 had the five speed TorqShift. That's what we have in our '06 Sightseer. It's a good transmission, with positive, if not aggressive downshifts while in Tow-Haul mode.

Pretty sure... likely the 2005 Ford chassis.

For RV's............probably not so much until all the V-10's are gone. I would hate to drop a bundle into a new Class C with a engine that hasn't been proven. Sure they will be under warranty but who wants the hassle? Ford's new engines can take awhile to have the design flaws appear. Examples: Diesel 6.0, the early V-10's spitting plugs?

V10 replacement

Not to worry. I love the gas 6.2 v8 engine. I've owned two V10's and the V8 is superior in power, torque and gas mileage. Been in use for at least 7years and holding up great. It's better than the V10

The new V8 will be a 7 liter engine, not a 6.2
The new "7X" engine is still unproven in the real world where the V-10 is a proven workhorse.
It will be interesting though if the cab dynamics change any with a slight decrease in the dog house size?
Either way, this will be a interesting engine when they make their way into the rv world.
