Did WB switch from the Lipper slide system on the 2016 Journey

I am considering a 2016 WB Journey 36M, but from what I've been reading, the Lipper slide control system has been a problemchild for WB owners. Did WB switch to a different system on the 2016 Journey 36M?

Thanks.

LCI, Lippert sells a number of different slide systems. And WBGO has used all of them, sometimes on the same RV with multiple slides.

https://www.lci1.com/slide-outs

During the mid-twenty tens the Schwintec system was problematic for many users, but I’ve met plenty of folks that claim they’ve had no issues with the system.

Sometime around 2016 or 2017 WBGO replaced the Schwintec slide system with Power Gear Slim Rack slides, also a Lippert product, on many if not most models.

The Slim Rack system has its problems but generally seems better than the Schwintec system.

The Through Frame Slide-Out system seems to be the best of this bunch, but limits basement storage space.

Hopefully someone that owns that year and model will join in and know exactly what systems were used in 2016 on that model.

Thank you so much for that information. The seller said Winnebago installed more powerful motors on the large electric slide but didn't know much more about the work that was done. From what I've been able to read at this point, I'm assuming he has ver 2 of the Power Gear system. Whether the factory did more than install new motors is unknown to me. However, the current owner is very cooperative. Hopefully, with authorization from him, I can get the information from the factory. If there is anything else slide-related that you would recommend checking out, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Again, thank you for taking the time to respond. The cost of even a used Journey is not exactly small change.

It’s been reported that in some instances the factory even removed Schwintec slides from customer’s RVs and replaced them with Slim Rack slides. But this seems to have been handled on a case by case basis.

I have three slides on my 2017 Adventurer. Two are Slim Rack and one is Through Frame. They’ve worked pretty well. Though I did take the RV to the factory in 2018 and had the slides adjusted under warranty. I did it more as a precaution than because of any serious issue.

The Swintek seem to work on short slides quite well. However on long slides they are at their limit. Swintek went thru 3 revisions, that included heavier motors for long slides in the latter revisions. The 3rd revision is what is now on my 2015 Vista long slide and still works after being on my unit for 3 years of use. The original OEM Swintek that was used by Winnebago when my unit was built in December, 2014 failed after 2 years.

It helps if you always operate the slides in and out per the instructions, holding the switch down for 5 seconds after the slide stops moving in or out and not stopping the slide between full in and full out.

It helps if you buy and use the recommended Winnebago spray lubricant with PTFE, and use it correctly! Don't just spray it all over the tracks this does no good. You have to use the extension tube bent into a hook as shown in the how to videos and spray into the bearing blocks.

The 4 bearing blocks (in the walls on either side of the slides) being able to move in and out so that the nylon roller stays centered in the "V" groove allowing the drive gears to stay fully meshed with the tracks is the key to the Swintek not failing.

The other thing I found on my 2015 Vista with Swintek is that the brakes in the motors are not good enough to solidly hold the long slides in when traveling. I made slide locks out of 2X4 material that I use when traveling. If you do this make a good system to make sure you always remove the lock blocks before operating the slide switches.

Randy gave some good tips on operating the slides.

Each slide has a controller and can be reset. Be very careful when using the reset mode as all safety controls are disabled. The motors on those slides are very powerful and can break something if the slide is to far out of sync. Never bring one side in more than two inches more than the other side. Even that is a lot.
