My wife and I were at an RV show tonight and a dealer we have experience with has a new 2005 Journey 36G with the Cummins 300 hp engine on the lot. We are going to look at it tomorrow and most features sound like what we are looking for. I searched the website and found some comments about this setup but wondering if there are others with experience that might have more current opions. While I like "more power" I don't just have to have it if the smaller hp and transmission is a proven performer. Any comments apprectiated.

I have a 2003 Horizon 36LD with a 330 Cat. That engine and the Cummins 300HP ISC have identical torque ratings and torque is the important number for a diesel, not HP. I pull a Honda CR-V which weighs about 3400 lbs. I am more than satisfied with the engine I have. We have traveled in the Sierra and the Rockies. You're not going to do 70 over Donner Pass but it will take a 500 HP Prevost to pass you. Remember, torque pulls the weight and takes you up the mountain.

The Cummins 300 horsepower engine is the ISB not the ISC. There is a big difference in torque and displacement, 5.9 vs 8.3 liters. The ISB is similar to the engine that is used in the Dodge Ram pickups. I feel the 7.3 Cat would be the preferred engine to the 5.9 Cummins in a motorhome.
I have the ISC in my 39K and have lots of pulling power.

As you can see I have an 04 Journey with the 300 Cummins, Allison 5 speed. I have had no problems at all. I have put 15000 miles on this setup and am pulling a toad. I flew up and down the rockies with toad with no problems. I am getting 9 mpg with toad and have no complaints.

Good Luck with your choice,

Thanks to all of you for your comments. We did look at the unit but decided it was not quite what would suit us in the long run. We think we need to move up a couple feet in length to get the layout we want.

Thanks again to all!

Bob,

I know what you mean. We started out tent camping and after I had some back problems we started looking at pop-up campers. We bypassed that and bought a 26 foot Sunnybrook trailer. We had that a few years and that changed when I won the PT Cruiser in a drawing. We then decided to get the Winnebago Brave and tow the PT Cruiser. Now we are thinking more towards what we want to half or full-time. I still have a few years before I can retire.

Regards,
John

OK, I'll do that. We actually would like to sell the Brave first rather than do a trade. I've had it for sale in our local paper and their web site for several months. Maybe I'll try listing it here at the IRV2 classifieds again. We are also planning for additional driveway and parking pad next to the house. I guess we should plan for size and weight of up to a 40 foot diesel motorhome.

Regards,
John
