CB Antenna on Winn Tour

I have a 2014 Tour and would like to install a through-the-body CB antenna. I'm currently using a two-piece window antenna (no holes drilled; affixed to each side of the side window) but it is not a very functional antenna. I'm interested in any other owner's experience in installing a through-the-body CB antenna (type of mount, location, wire routing, troubles, tips, etc.). Thanks.

Did you check the swr of the antenna to make sure that it is tuned properly? CB's operate on low power and do not transmit more than 5 miles under ideal situations, so unless a contact is real close and the terrain is flat without obstacles like tall buildings and trees, you may not be able to make contact. If you really desire to have communications with a radio, I would suggest studying for a Technician Class ham radio license, since there is no longer a morse code requirement. A ham radio hand held walkie talkie is really inexpensive and with the use of repeaters in most areas, the transmission range can double using the same 5 watts out on 2 meters.

Thanks ditto. Yes, please post some pictures if you can. Did dealer go through the glass or through the body by the window? Did dealer use a firestick side mount? What type of mount? Does the antenna seem to function well in your location? Tnx!

I bought a 4' firestick to install on my Forza. Haven't gotten around to installing it yet, but my plan is similar to what ditto had done.

Sorry if this comes through twice (phone locked up when I tried to send picture). I bought the 3' Fire Stick to install on my WB 30T. The antenna is the non grounded type with side mount. The issue I had was the studs in the side mount were not long enough to reach through the side wall of the front drivers side. I installed mine just in front of the drivers side mirror. I took the side mount to Lowes and got extensions to make the studs longer and this did the trick. My CB has a built in SCR meter so checking the antenna was easy. Here at the Campground the reception is good. I am happy with the install and the performance of the Fire Stick.

This is what mine looks like - Firestik, installed about six months ago. More install photos on request.

2012 Tour CB Install

I also installed the Firestik - added the spring to the base to allow for flex if tree limbs etc are encountered. From the front cabinet, I removed the backing to install the antenna and as mentioned earlier ran the antenna cable down the A post then within the side console to the CB mounted on the back of the console. Since I don't change the channel when traveling, I can set it at a channel we use when in a caravan or to 19.

When I drilled the hole into the coach, I used a technique I had seen when drilling thru a boat hull - they first drilled a small pilot hole 1/8" then took the correct sized drill bit and ran the drill in "reverse" -- this prevented cracking of the gel coat.

The only concern with mine is that it is tight against the rain gutter. If I add the spring, like I should, I will have to modify (remove) about three inches of the rain gutter which will cause water to fall directly onto the antenna mount. Photo attached.

Hi -
Did you measure the SWR on this antenna? There needs to be some kind of counterpoise on an ungrounded antenna otherwise it would pretty much be non-functional.

There are working through-the-glass antennas out there - mostly for the Ham set.

I'm contemplating a through-the-glass for my motorhome - the wife won't let me take drill to it quite yet.

Thanks,
Jerald Pendleton

Here are a couple more pictures close up on the antenna mount, I didn't have the rain gutter as you mentioned, not sure if this base mount would allow you any more room.

Would it be possible to put a spacer plate to extend the antenna mount off the side of the coach - since the antenna is a "no ground plane" version, you might be able to add some type of spacer, maybe a nylon or rubber block.

I had tried the thru the glass antenna - it didn't work anywhere near the performance of the firestik and I used an SWR meter to check it. I had a thru the glass on a truck years ago and it didn't perform as well as a friend who mounted one on the truck body.

I thought about moving the mount, the part the antenna attaches to (as opposed to the part that bolts to the side of the motorhome) away from the motorhome another one or two inches. That might cause a little flex that might work on the mounting to the motorhome. Wanted to use a mount like yours, but could not find a place on mine that did not have aluminum or steel tubing in the way.

I had a factory visit a couple weeks ago in May and asked the factory techs to install a CB for me as well as the antenna. They went thru the wall of my 35F above the drivers window but they didn't leave any info on the antenna. I had the radio installed on the wall below the window on my drivers left. Wires were all just left loose hanging from the bottom of the radio. I have a couple issues. I thought they might have done a "cleaner" install job since paid good money to have the "experts" do it in handling the wire situation. Second, the antenna mount is ok but they left me no info on the type/name/ brand/install instructions of the antenna. I called and they are working on it. It's been 2 weeks already. They say they guaranty their workmanship for 90 days, so it's on the books. Oh third, (I know I said 2) but the radio is wired, turns on but didn't know if it was calibrated since no one can hear me. I live in a populated area near a couple interstates so thought I'd get some kind of response. I asked that too and am waiting onthe answers. Hummmm
