A little more info would be helpful. I will take a stab at it anyway. If you are referring to the 6+ holes on the awning arm, one with a pin in it. Those would be to change the slope of your awning. They do have to be (i believe) with in two of each other when putting the awning up.

I these holes are not what you are talking about have not a clue. Maybe a picture would help, but then I have not figured out how to do pictures myself.

The “notches” are simply for the compression arm to retract into. They do nothing.

However, and I can’t tell by your photo, but if you have the “pins” BE HAPPY referred to, those will allow for an adjustment to the angle of the awning.

Check your owners manual in this regard. Carefree awnings for example, state that if your awning is under 12’, you CANNOT retract it unless all pins are in the same position, but are fine for angling rain to one side or the other while extended.

Over a 12’ awning, the pins can be in different positions when retracted, but not more than a three pin differential between the front and back arms.

See the photo for pins vs. the notches you initially asked about...

For any future questions, one of the most common things for new posters to know is that there are hundreds of different RV setups and posting lots of good info like year make model is one way to make it easier for folks to get back to you with the right info. Too many forget that we don't know what you have!
