I previously owned a 1997 Adventurer, and my last was a 03 Journey which I loved. I was going to have back and knee surgery so I sold my Journey in 06.
I am recovering and thinking about buying another Adventurer . The one I am looking at is a 2004 WPG38R with 7,000 miles. I know nothing abt Workhorse or the new Chev 8.1.
I would like to make an offer and would appriciate some advice.
Thanks, Jake

I would check the CCC on that model as I believe it was built on the W-22, which might make it a HEAVY unit for that chassis.

The 8.1 liter is a good engine (check out the Workhorse forum here on IRV2.net), and you will have the 5-speed Alison trans...good unit.

Ranger and Cannon, Thanks for the advice .
I have been aside the road for a while and out of touch with RVing. I was at the National irv2 Rally in Lancaster , I think that might have been in 06. I was at the GNR in Forrest City several times but have no idea what the market is .
How do I find out if that W-22 chassis is ok for that MH . I hope someone that reads this and has one will be able to advise me.
Again thanks much for the help.
Jake

Welcome back to RVing and to IRV2. As others have suggested, the market is pretty soft with high fuel prices so you should be able to get most any used unit for a great price.

I have also placed your post in the Workhorse Chassis owners forum to get more answers to your Workhorse-specific chassis questions.

The 7,000 mile seems a bit low. That said, I have that exact model. Fully loaded I am just under GVW, but it runs like a champ. I have the Ultrapower upgrade, as well as Koni shocks. Both help the overall performance and "rideability".

The coach has lots of room and if you can get a good price go for it.

Good luck.

Bill

I also have a 38R but a 2005 Suncruiser built on the W24 chassis. The 38R is a great floor plan, IMHO.

If you want a 38R I suggest looking for a 2005 or 2006 on the W24 Workhorse chassis. The W24 was a $4530 option in 2005 and in 2006 it was standard. Very few 2006 38R's were built as the model was discontinue in late 2005. My 38R on the W24 has a CCC of 3239#. That's a lot for a gas chassis that is 38' 11" long.

Look in the hanging clothes closet of the 38R you're interested in and read the CCC from the weight label on the wall.

The W24 has huge brakes, a lower rear end ratio and the Allsion 2100 transmission.

Jake, do yourself a favor and search this forum for brake problems on the W22 chassis. If you feel comfortable with the information and love the floor plan, go for it.

I have a 38R on a Workhorse also and run just under GVW. Also tow a 2007 CRV. We are very happy with the coach. CCC is respectible, I can't remember the exact figure off hand but loaded for a winter in Florida I had it weighed and it was just under GVW. Mileage is usually in the 6.5 - 7.5 mph range.

Good luck with your purchase.

I had my 2005 38R weight on 11/1/2007 on our way to FL for 6 months. I weighed 22,900#. I was towing a Honda Civic but had the car unhooked when on the scales. I had full water, gas and propane and my wife and I were in the coach.

I would love to know the CCC (from the sticker in the bedroom closet) is on all these 38R's on the W-22's. I bet we are talking less than 800 lbs CCC.

Below is a photo of my closet weight label. My CCC is 3239#. The W22 would be ~2000# less which would be ~1239#.

Anyone 38R owner with a W22 care to post a photo of their closet weight label??

As I stated in a previous post I would want the W24, especially if I planned to do any serious retirement RVing. A 38R on the W24 chassis may not be easy to find as it was a $4530 option for the 2005 model and many buyers did not opt for it and dealers did not order it for stocked units. The W24 was not available for the 2004 38R model.

Thanks everyone for you advice. I have found the MH weight info. GVRW 22,000, UVW 19,569, SCWR 616, CCC 971,GCWR 26000, Factory Installed Option 339.
This MH has 6600 miles and has been setting along while and after reading your info I am concerend about the brakes and weight.

Photog(Bill) and Paul C, has weight or brakes been a problem for you . You did not mention either so I hope it has not.
Thanks very much for taking the time to help me . Maybe I will be able to see you all again .

The 38R is too much coach for the W22 chassis. If you want a 38R I suggest looking for a 2005 or 2006 on the W24 Workhorse chassis.

If you're on a budget I suggest looking at a 35U. The 35U has a bedroom and bath similar to the 38R. The 35U has lots of floor space for a 35' coach. There are lots of 35Us for sale as this floor plan was very popular.
