Weight and brakes have not been a problem with the coach.

As far as Tom's comment "The 38R is too much coach for the W22 chassis". He certainly is entitled to his opinion. Needless to say, I don't agree with him.

This is why I feel the 38R is too much coach for the W22 chassis.

Poppop posted the weight stats from the 38R he is considering.

"I have found the MH weight info. GVRW 22,000, UVW 19,569, SCWR 616, CCC 971,GCWR 26000, Factory Installed Option 339."

IMHO, a CCC of 971# is insufficient for a coach that has 106.8 cu ft of exterior storage. Not to mentioned the large about of interior cabinets the 38R has.

I opted for the extra cost W24. My 38R weighs 22,900#. If I had ordered the standard W22 I'd be almost 1000# over the W22 chassis limit.

If a 38R on the W22 chassis weighs less than 22,000# they are not carrying much gear. Actually less than 971# as Poppop's weight label indicates.

I won't even mention the W22's brake problems some are having.

Tom, your opinion is noted and I respect it. There is no question your W24 has more CCC than the W22.

However, if the W22 was such a big problem for the 38R, why did Winnebago build it? I suspect they thought the chassis was OK for the load.

You obviously have a lot more loaded in your coach than I do. I am fairly well loaded. Yet, with full gas and water, and two passengers, both over 200lbs, my weight was 21,450.
I'm not sure where I'd put an additional 1,450lbs.

I haven't had brake problems. I know the subject has been beaten to death on this forum. It would be interesting to see a survey, similar to the UltraPower survey, as to how many folks with W22's have had brake problems.

First, I'm not knocking owners of a 2004 38R. Winnebago had to use the W22 for the 38R in 2004. That was the largest capacity chassis available. Given the choice, as I had, I'll guess many would opt for the W24. The OP has a choice between an '04, '05 and '06. I suggested an '05 on the W24 over a '04 on the W22.

And I carry lots of beer in bottles. I'll have to weigh a case. My job this week is to clean out all the basement compartments.

One fact we can all agree on is the 38R is a great floor plan. When parked, as we are 99% of the time, the chassis is meaningless.
