Please verify but I think your Adventurer has the Ford V-10 gas engine - correct? If so, there is a water valve that diverts hot coolant from the engine into the heater core for heat. The valve shuts off for vent and dash air conditioning. With the dash AC off, does hot air come out of the vents when the temp control is set in the maximum blue area?
Also, the air intake into the heater/air conditioner is very close to the engine so if you are idling (like at a stop light) it will suck hot air off the engine into the air conditioning system. Once you are moving, it will cool off again. A way to test this is to set your dash air conditioner to "recirculate" mode so that it does not suck in outside air.
If everything is working properly you should have pretty cold air blowing out of your dash AC vents especially while moving. So something is wrong with your system.
