Wink 2005 Winnebago Sunova Engine Temperature gage

2005 Winnebago Sunova
My engine temperature gauge jumps from normal to hot And then way beyond to what would be about 9 o’clock on the gauge. The Engine is not overheating and if I turn it off and let it sit for awhile it clicks back to normal. Some times I can just turn the key on and off and it will keep jumping up ward. Help !

I would try things in this order:
  1. Replace the temperature sender
  2. Check the wiring for a short-to-ground
  3. Replace the Gauge

Many dash gauges these days are driven by the computer and are stepper motors instead of traditional gauge mechanisms. On my 2003 Chevy Avalanche, Eventually, the steppers wear out. I finally had to replace all of the stepper motors on the instrument cluster when the fuel and speedo indicators failed
