2005 Winnebago Journey limp mode going up hill

Need help. Recently on a short drive my Journey ran fine for about 10 miles and then went into limp mode going up hill at about 2000 rpms and also started releasing black smoke. Thanks for any feed back on similar issues.

If you haven't done so already you may want to start by changing the fuel filters.

Black smoke is not fuel filters. I believe your Journey has a CAT in it.


Black Smoke is really just an imbalance in the air to fuel ratio - too much fuel to not enough air. This means either too much fuel is being added to the mix or there's not enough oxygen being supplied to burn the fuel. The black smoke is full of particulates that are basically large diesel particles that normally would be burned as fuel. Any way you look at it, a diesel truck emitting black smoke is not going to be getting the optimal fuel mileage it should be getting.
Most common causes of black smoke are faulty injectors, a faulty injector pump, a bad air filter (causing not enough oxygen to be supplied), a bad EGR valve (causing the valves to clog) or even a bad turbocharger. Some of these are easy fixes.

Thanks so much for your insight. I have a great mobile mechanic but he doesn't have access to diagnostic eqipment. He mentioned all the things you mentioned here. Since we don't have diagnostics where would you start? The diesel motor is a Cummins.

I would take it right to a Cummins repair facility. You can spend a lot of $$$$ throwing parts in and it does not fix the problem.

You can do a visual by crawling underneath and see if you see anything obvious. Maybe a turbo hose came off etc.

Could also be a stuck exhaust brake...

Thanks for all the feed back. It wouldn't make it to the nearest Cummins we are south of Flaggstaf where they are located. Couldn't get it up the hill. Will start by replacing filters and see where we go from there. Have been researching the threads.

I’ve had similar issues with my 05 meridian, spewed oil out the breather. It was a stuck turbo waste gate. Good luck.

What is the condition of your air filter? Possible turbo problem too.
