02 Journey Air Filter

My air filter on my 330 Cat is 4 years old with about 25,000 miles of highway driving on it. Guage shows no movement. Should it be replaced this year as I heard paper element could break down. It is one piece unit. Thks. Rkl

I don't know about Cat. But Cummins says to change it every 2 years regardless of mileage. On second thought, maybe it's Freightliner that says that.

Reset the gauge and check after next trip. After those few miles I wouldn't worry about it. Remember big rigs log about 600 + miles a day and the truckers do change but once a year. Doing the math you are good for a long time. I've changed mine too often don't worry about it.

RKL, I think a lot is determined by the environment you are operating in. You can get a good look at the entrance of the filter by removing the large rubber inlet duct. I operate mainly in the dry desert southwest, but still change the filter every 3-4 years.

Why not replace it? At $125 or $150 for the filter it's a lot less expensive to to replace it than to pay someone to dig filter elements out of the intake system or turbo if the filter starts coming apart, no? Just my opinion.

In the CampFreightliner class, the instructor was very adamant about replacing that filter every 2 years, PERIOD! He said you do not want it breaking down and dusting your engine. I've been buying my air filters from the local FL dealer and I think the last one was about $66. Cheap insurance to avoid a $30K engine rebuild.

OTOH, Cummins says not to disturb the air intake system unless the filter-minder indicates a change is required. To do more often increases the chance of creating an air leak and dusting the engine. That's what my Cummins owners manual states anyway.
