Troubleshooting an Onan 4KY Spec: K

Good evening folks. I got a few Q's about this Genset. But first, I did quite a bit of searching on Google/iRV2, I just need a little more info on the subject of "Gen starts but does not keep running". I think I've narrowed it down to the voltage regulator, the brushes, the ring, or the control board. So..

1) Is it best to remove the Genset from the Moho to work on it.

2) After repairs have been made, can it be bench tested. Provided it has 12 volt and a gasoline supply to it.

Also we just got back from a 4 1/2 week vacation. No issues until the last day on the road.

TIA

Steve

Fuel pump and or filter. I'de change that before ripping the generator out of the rig.

Rockbound-

Per Ranger Smith's recommendation, below is a link to a Web page (with pictures) for replacing the fuel pump and filter on an Onan 4000 Microquiet.

also make sure you have 1/2 tank of gas or more the generator uses a different pick up in the tank so that you dont run it to long and run out of gas.
try taking the gas line off the carb and crank over a couple times to see if your getting gas,if you get enough gas drop the carb bowel and check for dirt and crud in it.if not run enough the gas in the bowel evaporates and you end up with the crude ,that looks like real fine sandy rust.

Thanks for the suggestions and the link. I will do the fuel flow from the pump and bowl removal in the AM. The Moho fuel tank was just shy of a full tank. In a test a few months ago, the generator will run until the main tank reaches just below a 1/4 tank. I will update when I can.
Thanks guys.

We know the 4kws have a fuel pump issue. We are on #3 and have less than 200 hours on her.

Well the fuel pump flows like a water fountain and the carb. bowl was surprisingly clean. So next I'll search on how to remove the control board and locate the voltage reg.
Oh and still got the "starts but does not run" issue.

Update:

I removed the generator from the Moho and took it to a repair shop. The control board is good. They said the brushes might be worn down so much that it damaged what holds them in. That is something I don't understand. An estimate $1,000 to repair.
The genset has 1,100 hours on it. And a new one is $3,000 +/-.
Onan MicroQuiet 4000K 4KYFA26100K Spec K.
Question: Is there a difference between a Spec K and a Spec L ?

Thanks

Steve

Low oil level also will stop them running after starting.
