I am looking at adding a surge protector on our coach. Question is, is it necessary and if so which surge protector do you recommend. We have 50 amp service in an 08 Itasca Meridian.

Thanks for any input.

Here is a link to our RV page - click on the Surge Guard link for details about ours.

I absolutely believe a SurgeGuard is a necessity. We had ac damage, likely due to low voltage, before installing ours (hard wired). We have had no electrical damage since we installed ours (except for a lightning strike, and I believe it saved us some damage in that case -- the SurgeGuard itself was destroyed and replaced free of charge by the mfg). Ours is built by TRC.

I believe having one is more important than the brand.

I have installed the hard wired Surge Guard and have had no problems. I prefer the hard wired model because it doesn't have to be locked to any thing, as it is behind a locked compartment door. Mine is wired to include all sources including the generator. I would not be without one.

As others above have stated, it is a necessity.

I too had to replace AC motors because (most likely) of low voltage situations. Since installing the "Surge Guard" I haven't had any problems at all while staying at the same campgrounds.

I just installed a Surge Guard. It is a hard wired model but I chose to install it with plugs and receptacles so it can be removed from the circuit if necessary. If I have to remove it for any reason, I can plug the cord back together and use the cord.

I installed an EMS-LCHW50. It is hardwire and protects the coach from the Generator and Shore power. For more info go to my website - EMS-LCHW50

I use the Progressive Industries portable 50 amp protector. It has done a nice job and gives all the information you need. Frankly, most of the name brand ones are of good quality.

i use a PROGRESSIVE 50a portable surge guard like HIGGINS. it is available for about $100. it is very easy to use. works ok with adapters for 30a power pedestals too. some of the others cost 3-5 times $100. i don't think you get 3-5 times the protection.

EMS-LCHW50 is the only way to go. I have had two of them on on a 30amp coach and now a 50amp unit on my Journey. You can hard wire and have a montor in coach to check things out.

We have the Hughes autoformer and it does not provide nearly the amount of spike clamping that my purpose-designed Surge Guard does. Be sure and read the specifications before assuming one will replace the other.

I only drag out my 30 amp autoformer when I have a low voltage situation. My Surge Guard though is always on patrol since it is hard-wired.

I also installed an EMS-LCHW50. It is hardwire and protects the coach from the Generator and Shore power. I also have a Hughes 50amp booster hardwired. It all works great for me.

I have the hard wired model with inside monitor. Its cheap insurance and I would not be without one.
