Sounds like one or more of your check valves is bad and needs changed out.

I agree with previous poster. Let us know if we are right when you get it fixed.

Don't forget to drain the tank ever 6 mo or more if in 'dirty' water. Water heavy with minerals will leave junk in the tank and reduce efficiency. But the check valve sounds like a fix possibility.

Don't forget to periodically Burp the water heater also. Prior to getting it good and hot make sure its full then open the purge valve, the one with the lever while running the water pump or hooked up to city water. Wait until water comes out. This will help get rid of that air space that is created over time of heating and cooling the water. You may have noticed that your hot capacity had gone down over time, this will fix that.

As a temporary fix you can just remove the guts from the check valves,

The check valves go bad. that's what causes that dreaded sound. I was told by a Winni Tech that they are used only for winterization. Since we winter in Vegas, he removed them and that solved the problem.

I thought the check valves were to prevent hot water from being siphoned back into the cold water faucet.

The check valve allows air to flow one way but not the other. When you dump the tanks air needs to come thought the check valve into the tank. You don't want tank air going the other way it would smell up the coach.

Yes, you do not want hot water flushing your toilet. Also some manufacturers save a little money by replace one of more of the winterizing bypass valves.

Yep, it came in last week. The temperature here in Vegas is supposed to be in the 70s next week so I'll make that my project time.
