Solar awning coming soon?
I saw this interesting article in Car and Driver today.

Ten thousand dollars???? For 1.2 kilowatts... which is 1,200 watts! Lets see, roof mounted solar panels are about $100 per 100 watts - so 1,200 watts would cost ~$1,200. Right now I can buy 6-200w solar panels - which would fit on my RV's roof for $1,248 on Amazon and that's not even the cheapest..
Hummm, I wonder which I would buy?

A solar roof (replacement for TPO) for $25/ft2 would be interesting. A solar awning is much less so since it can’t be left unattended. $10K is nuts.
Edit - It seems like lately I’m getting all my RV news from C&D.

Nope, not for me. Makes very little sense.

Definitely for RV owners who have more money than brains.

Doesn’t sound like any winnieowners.com members will be able to give us a review any time soon! :-)
Except for the cost, it sounds like an interesting idea for those that need more solar than they can put on their roofs. I wonder how the constant folding and unfolding would hold up over time?
Also, where I like to RV, mainly on the west coast, there is likely too much wind for them to work well.
I like to see the blending of technologies, however, like the awning and solar power. If Elon can make solar shingles, maybe there is a market for this somewhere!

I see the integration of solar cells and fabric is being developed now, I would bet some day soon you will see RVs advertising "Full Body Solar" like they now do "Full Body Paint"

That I can see happening and it would be full-time solar.

I'm not an expert at all, but it seems these panel systems are very sensitive to any portion of the panel being shaded (drop in power is much larger than the relative shaded area). With "full roof" or "full body" systems, I'm guessing they'd need the ability to automatically isolate individual shaded cells otherwise you'd have very disappointing cumulative power output.

Newcastle University close to producing solar cells that can be painted on roofs.
