Smoke Alarm Problems

I have a 2007 40' Winnebago Tour and am having issues with my smoke alarm. Whose bright idea was it to put it in the kitchen? I can't even make toast or fry an egg without it going off. I had to take the toaster into the bathroom, close the door, and turn on the fan to get breakfast this morning. I put a new battery in -- no difference. I have taken the silly thing down for now. Anybody else have these problems?

Yup. The DW now takes the battery out every time she cooks

The Smoke Detector on my rig is in the front above the driver and passenger seats. No problem so far, but I haven't tested it with any cajun cooking yet.

Maybe you could relocate it as a test?

That's a good idea Bluepill. I'll try relocating it to the lounge area. I have a front kitchen and it's almost directly over the stove. Really silly area to put it (and really, really loud).

Who's idea it was to put the "Dinner's Ready" alarm in the kitchen

(There is a joke, REDNECK dinner bell.... Smoke alarm)

I don't know.. but on the range there should be a hood, on the hood there should be a switch, turns on a fan.. I have found that it really helps exhaust the smoke and not the alarm. Or the Fantastic fan. We have gone months on end without testing our smoke alarm by simply using the fans.

We finally moved our detector to the front of the motorhome. Now we set it off all the time with our television remote device. We haven't come up with a good location yet.

Been living in the coach for 8 years and maybe ONCE, the smoke alarm has activated. I test it monthly. It's located just rear of the Kool-O-Matic Fan across from the frig in the beginning of the hallway that leads to the bath and bedroom.

We do use the attic fan a lot when cooking but it's only to remove the heat and not from SMOKE due to cooking.

Actually, when the batteries expire, it makes more chirping noise then than anytime otherwise. The dog hates the chirping.

Ours is in the front and doesn't go off unless it needs a new battery. Location...location...location.

We have a front kitchen and the alarm is located just behind the Wonder fan. I've had the stove fan and the wonder fan running at the same time when it goes off. There hasn't been any visible smoke any time it has gone off. I don't want to schlep the toaster outside just for a piece of toast, so I've decided the best location for it is in a drawer with the battery removed.

If there's a fire, you can always take it out and insert the battery.

We have the same set up. We put one of those disposable bowl covers that are made out of saran wrap and have elastic edges (kinda like a small shower cap) over our smoke detector while cooking. It works great. The biggest challenge is to remember to remove it when we've finished cooking.

Hope that helps.

We had the same problem. We normally have a small fan we run to circulate the air in the coach and when we cook I just redirect it toward the smoke alarm and that takes care of it.

Very funny, Jack, I suppose that way I would know it's still working. Boris and Natasha, that's actually the best solution I've heard of so far. Only problem is that we're vertically challenged and would have to get the stool out to cover and uncover the alarm. It's strange that a toaster sets it off, but not cigarette smoke (yep, I'm one of THOSE people who actually still smoke).

Ours goes off, and the 3 Chihuahuas all run and hide. Found if I crack open the power roof vent fan and turn it on low and run the fan under the micro wave on low the 3 Amigos will come out of hiding.
