red fluid leak from dash

2001 36' Itasca Horizon. I dont know if it's hydrolic fluid or engine coolant, but we're on a trip out west and noticed a drip coming from the vent just to the riggt of the dash ac/heat vents nearest the floor. Thru that vent I can see what looks like a filter...appears to be pretty dirty. How can i access to clean the filter, and could that be the problem? Thanks in advance for any advice.

RoadHappy;
Is your engine coolant red?
If so I suspect you have a coolant leak, (probably at a hose clamp or in the hearer core).

Yes, coolant is red. Any idea how to access the clogged filter behind that vent?

No that is not the problem as there is no filter in that system, and you will need to replace the heater core. Common failure on those units after 10-15yrs. As a temporary fix you can disconnect the heater hoses and connect them together so that no fluid goes through the heater.

You may find that you have shutoff valves for the automotive heater core like these underneath near the engine on my coach (sorry they're a bit fuzzy):

One on the feed line and one on the return--turn them both off to isolate the heater core.

Wow, cut off valves! That's great. Never saw any vehicle with those.

And here I was thinking it was blinker fluid...

You beat me to it, I was going for the blinker fluid, but I thought it only came in green! But then Red and Green make sense, for port and starboard!:

Yes, I agree, sounds like you have a heater core leak. you can bypass the heater core if need be.
