Question Onan KY4000 (series D) starts, stops, no run

as title says Onan KY4000 (series D) starts, stops, no run;

had same problem recently & after a week or 2 it suddenly decided to run again after multiple attempts, & seemed OK;

another 2 weeks gone by & now it won't run (again)

have the troubleshooting manual (TS) & maintenance manuals;

have gone thru most of the TS tests, which is a major challenge with the unit in a small cubby under my '95 Itasca 29WQ with too-small an access door (why did they do that??)

it appears at this point in the TS sequence that the problem is most likely the brushes since the resistance reading to them is "too high"

the TS manual suggests they should maybe be "cleaned" with a "slipstick" but it does not appear that they can be accessed w/o totally removing the unit from under the RV & dismantling the gen-set halfway

does any one have a suggestion on solving this with unit in place ?

? any way to maybe squirt some devil juice in there & get 'em functional ?

You might try spraying WD40 inside the armature area to see if that cleans things up, but have a fire extinguisher handy, when you test it.

Does your Onan display any blinking error codes at the power switch on the side of the generator?

Mine would try to start for about 3 seconds, shut off, and display a code. By chance, I held that switch firmly in the STOP position for about 10 seconds. The generator went "beep", the error code went away, and the generator magically was then able to start and run normally. Maybe I was just lucky. If you try this trick and it works, let is know. Good luck!
