Onan 5500 shows 50 amp output

We have a 2001 Adventurer 32v with 30 amp shore power. I have noticed before the second 20 amp breaker on the genset, in the off position as it should be. Thinking recently about converting to 50 amps because of high amp usage on hot Kansas summer days. (Our coach has basement A/C and on occasion the second compressor kicks in, taking a bunch of our 30 amps.) I turned the 20 amp breaker on and off for when I changed the oil the other day. When I ran the genset to check for leaks I noticed on the EMS panel it read 50 amps. I have not noticed any amp readout with genset running before, but maybe just missed it. Has anyone else noticed this? And, if it is putting out 50 amps is that a problem?

Thanks,

Phil

It's designed for that. There's another 20 amp available for the rear AC. So when you're running your genset you can run both ACs...but...that's all it's connected to, the rear AC, in most 30 amp rigs.

And of course they (Onan) fudges the numbers, you get 50 amp when the output is 110 Volt AC. Generally, it's not set for that, it's actually set for 120 volt which is the USA standard. Generally, it can only supply a strong 45.8 amps.

If your EMS is showing 50 amp, that's cool, that's what you're getting so go with it.

I asked my coach manufacturer why they put in a 5500 generator in a 30 amp coach. It is useful for a second air-conditioner and they are cheaper in bulk.

Skipperphil , both of the breakers on the generator should be on. When you run the generator the 30 amp breaker feeds the breaker panel which feeds the #1 circuit in the air conditioner unit and the 20 amp breaker feeds the #2 circuit in the air conditioner unit. The EMS sensus that the generator is running and on some units sets the display to 50 Amps and on others sets the display to blank.
