NO House Batteries

I am going to replace my 2 12volt (because of age) with 4 6 volt and I have to do some cutting on the MH (about 3/4 of a inch) in order for them to slide in properly. This could take a few days because I want to take my time and do it right.

It got me to thinking can I remove the old batteries and leave the MH plugged in? I know I have to be careful and not let the + and - touch anything.....

I have done this; the converter will supply 12V power to the devices that need the 12V. Check wiring to make sure the converter output still has a positive/negative path to the DC breaker panel.

Make sure you do not run large current systems (such as slides). The converter may be overloaded depending on the size of your converter/size of load.

Also make sure your inverter is shut off as well, as they usually draw straight from batteries.

EDIT: If you have a combination inverter/charger it might be a bit trickier....

Might it be safer for you and the coach to either 1) leave one battery in the system with cable extensions, or 2) totally disconnect all power sources in / to the coach?

My suggestion:

Disconnect the shore power.

Remove the positive cable that goes to the MH and wrap it with electrical tape so that it cannot short out to ground.

Reconnect the shore power and continue to remove the other cables and the batteries. As long as you do not short the pos and neg terminals on the batteries to each other, you are protected.

If you are not living in it, just kill all power. It is just a lot safer and protects you mistakes.

Being there are doubts...... I think what I am going to do is just unplug from shore power and make sure the work gets done in a couple days........

Good for you, the smartest move you could make. If you are like me something would go wrong and things would just snowball into a mess that could have been prevented in the first place.

Also the Wife would not let me live it down either.
