Does anyone know if the NAPA Stowaway battery #8240 that Winnebago put in my MH is a maintenance free battery?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum . Unless the battery is absorbed glass mat (AGM), it is likely not 'maintenance free.' If it has caps over the cells, it needs to be checked periodically for water level.

Just because the top of the battery is completely flat doesn't mean it is maintenance free. Look carefully at the edge of the top - there might be a notch where you can lift up a cover to expose the cells.

Formerly, only gel or AGM batteries were sealed and there was no need to ever check water (because there was no water to check .)

Perhaps the new Optima batteries are really sealed with no maintenance - I have no experience with them. I seriously doubt if yours are maintenance free.

Welcome to the forum - glad to have you aboard!

Yes, there is a notch where I can get a screwdriver under the cap.

Thanks

Just replaced the chassis battery last Friday on our rig. 3 years on the original Workhorse battery, probably would have lasted much longer but there was no provision to remove the caps. Each time I service the coach batteries, I have tried but was afraid to pry too hard against the top.

The installer thought I was wrong, and tried prying up what looks like a cap. As I had guessed might happen he actually punctured the top of the battery trying, and still did not get the "cap" to give any.

I now have an Interstate with removable caps for servicing, and if it goes bad it won't be a problem getting it taken care of most anywhere in the country.
