Installing Chassis Batteries
NEED HELP
I am replacing the chassis batteries on my 2003 Ultimate freedom. Hooked up the negative to negative. When I touch the positive cable to the positive battery post, the horn blows. It sounds strange but this is what is happening. I am obviously doing something wrong, and I need some help in trying to correct it. Can anybody tell me why this happens and how can I correct it.

What us your configuration, two 12v batteries in parallel? If yes then the negatives are tied together, and the positives are ties together. Then the negative is connected to ground and the positive goes to the loads.
Too late now, but a good thing to do is takes pictures of the interconnects before taking it apart.

The chassis battery is the engine battery. You connect the negative last when hooking up a battery so hopefully there was no permanent damage to the engine computer from doing things in reverse order.

Are you changing the batteries because they were totally dead ? Maybe you know why now.

It could be a stuck horn relay. You removed power which could have closed the relay and it didn't open when you put the new power back in. The relay is 11 years old and subject to failure.

My coach is a year younger and a different model ... but I just checked my chassis batteries ... the batteries are connected to each other in parallel ... then they are connected to the coach as follows(+) is connected to ground
(-) is connected to load
so I am wondering if you reversed the polarity of the connection ...

Wow -- Just like early British cars, called positive ground. How common is this?

I think there must be some confusion--your chassis is NOT positive ground.

I have 2 12V batteries connected in Paralllel, I did take some pictures before I removed the old batteries.The new batteries are connected the way you said .
I connected the neg. to ground and Pos. to load.
However the horn kept sounding when I connected the Pos. to the bat.
It did this several times then stopped and all sems to be working ok
I was hoping to hear from someone who had a simelar experience.

Was the horn sounding on and off, like an alarm system? Just a thought.
To the guy with the positive ground motorhome, I think you need to take another look at your cables. Positive ground went out in the fifty's.
