Chassis Battery Replacement 2005 Vectra 36RD

My chassis battery voltage always seems to be low (under 12.3 volts) and now I am getting warning messages on the info center when starting. I have externally charged the batteries but they seem to drop down to 12.3 or lower fairly quickly (1-2) hours. When replacing the chassis batteries do you need to externally supply 12 volts to retain ECM module settings and the like or do you just disconnect and swap them out. I have a CAT C7 engine.
